What went wrong on the development of Quake?
What went wrong on the development of Quake?
Holy shit, they look young. That's legacy.
no coat hangers
I believe it was a perfect storm of "geniuses" tard wrangling each other. Then they stopped doing that and it all fell apart.
It's been a while since I watched it, let me take a jab at it: the one one the left had more math, the one on the right had more vision? The one on the left was an autist, but he had a vision for sure too. The one one the right is the only game developer who I can think is a legit rockstar. John Romero and John Carmack?
? Quake was very popular?
The only problem is games like dukenikem by that time were already uping the interactivity level in lvl design and plot and fetch red blue green key in flat corridor battles were passed. Just a few years later we would have masterpieces like deus ex and V:TM.
In a way quake style won though Becuase all modern FPS games are brainless spam, one there were more normies than smart people with computers
Romero got caught up in being a rock star game developer and quit doing the work to develop games. Carmack and the rest of id decided Romero was not focusing on game development enough and fired him. Romero then vindicated that perception of him by mismanaging the development of Daikatana.
Daikatana.
What the fuck was even that? Tell me he doesn't look like a rockstar. The image ran away with the gaming. On the other hand Carmack was an insufferable faggot.
John Carmack killed his cat. John Romero was horrified and told him off but Carmack remained completely indifferent.
They spent over a year just to develop the engine and had to scrap their more outlandish gameplay ideas in favour of a making another doom style shooter that would sell well, Romero and the other designers didn't like that so they left after the game was done.
Shame he couldn't be convinced to start working again. I think both he and John Carmack really benefit from each others presence. It's not like after they canned his ass Id suddenly got better.
Romero then vindicated that perception of him by mismanaging the development of Daikatana.
What the fuck?
Carmack and Romero benefited from each other's presence, no? Like a Lennon and McCartney. They were young and had no money and created something unique that would change the world. They rode the wave.
it wasn't really deus ex which was the nail to the coffin of doom-style fps... it was counter strike, bf1942 and CoD and mmorpg. no ai can beat the interactivity of a human player (yet)
start getting offers to license the game engines, make far more money than making games
asked to make the engine more user friendly and portable in c++, even hire more stuff to focus on the engine instead
nah I'll focus on developing the 10nth reiteration of doom instead with lighting and shadows, plus I dont like big teams, and dont want anyone to mess with my code
keep the team at barely 8 people, with only 2-3 coders
Epic comes in and eats all the market share of the engine licensing boom
what a bunch of fucking retards
lol
Man, there's a very good movie in it. Fuck Epic. I havent played 'Unreal' to this day.
At least Carmack made the Quake 2 and 3 Engines which were used on a shitload of other games.
Romero made jack shit after he left ID.
That's why I said Romero is a rockstar. He makes one good album and leaves. But it's an album that's changed the course of history.
Romero founded Ion Storm which made the best game of all time
Lately he created Sigil which is like the synthesis of everything that was great about Doom
Carmack went on to sell himself to Zuckerberg and create the worst engine known to man
People who worship Carmack have innate fear of honesty and would rather lull themselves into CEO keynotes
Carmack never created a single level, animation or a soundbite
Common misconception is that Carmack toiled alone on these things
en.wikipedia.org
...Ion Storm which made the best game of all time
Lately he...
Last good id software game was Quake and that was also Romero's brainchild
Romero sells DOOM wads for roblox money now
Carmack was obviously the better programmer, but he has never made a great game with Romero
and Duke 3D > DOOM and Quake
Blood > Doom 2 > Doom > Duke 3D > Quake
nothing.
john carmack is one of the best programmers ever and john romero is one of the best game designers ever, naturally they drifted apart to focus on what they felt was more interesting. it was a miracle they found each other so early on in their careers, because chances are they wouldve just been some hired help at some other game company, spinning their wheels and doing what was asked of them.
we are honestly lucky they met each other and made stuff for as long as they did.
Never knew Anon Babble was so infested with 'young' old people. Let's talk about Nintendo. You're all just a bunch of PC faggots.
contrarian fag
Cast it.
Here's that rockstar game designer I was telling you about.
You never heard of Rise of the Triad, bro?
I like how Anon Babble is showing its heart. We never talked about this. I can guess your age.
Unreal was the better multiplayer
We're all just gamers.
The NIN guys were renting the lower floor of that building.
The judge in the Apple II heist case made a remark that Carmack lacked human empathy.
Partly.
Romero was handed his resume because he was not really doing anything during the developement of quake.
He was looking towards going elsewhere, probably talking to Tom Hall in the background.
He wanted to make Daikatana, an RPG FPS about time travel and shit.
But they were crunching to get quake done.
Quake was already taking alot longer than they thought and tempers were high.
Put this nigga in a time machine
It's pretty wild to think 'Terminator 2' got developed in the same year 'Doom' was. That shows you how much of a discrepancy there was between movies and games.
Carmack
