Season 1 was meh, some fun case of the week episodes and the gradual introduction of Wolfram & Hart, Lilah, and the groundwork for Angel's cause
Seasons 2, 3, and first half of 4 and last half of 5 are the absolute best kino imaginable
Second half of 4 and first half of 5 are kinda shit, but season five did have that really brutal Angel/Spike fight that was a highlight of a dull episode

Angelus is a depraved killer but he's also extremely defiant when it comes to authority because his father hated him while he was alive. When we see him first meet the Master in flashbacks, he immediately defies him even though he's promised power. With S4 it was a similar thing - he knew he'd been released by some other entity and he didn't like being someone else's pawn, so his priority was finding and killing the person who thought they could control him.

the standout episodes are really good but the bad points and bad writing of angel are far worse than the ones of buffy

The Angel version of Angelus isn't the same as the Buffy version. The Angel version is closer to his human side. Total hedonist who loves pissing people off. The Buffy version is a cringey try-hard serial killer who if I'm not mistaken only actually kills two people, one of which isn't even a named character.
Honestly I prefer the Angel version. Boreanaz can do unhinged maniac, he can't do creepy stalker convincingly at all.

I hated Gunn because I felt like Whedon was trying to have his cake and eat it too by casting a gay nonthreatening Urkel to play a thuggish nigga character. Either cast a guy who can be credibly masculine and threatening or rewrite the character to be a gay Urkel so the actor can actually do the role justice. The arc in season 5 where he becomes an angsty lawyer is the first time in the entire show where the actor looked comfortable.

Learning that the Actor for Gunn was a flamboyant bottom Was unsettling.

The forced romance was mostly to give them something to do while the show focused on Wesley's angst arc. The season 5 arcs where Fred gets skinsuited by an autistic demon who turns Wesley's emotional world upside down and then complicates his character development further by befriending him, and Gunn turning into a morally ambiguous lawyer, were the best things to happen to those characters since they were introduced and should have happened a lot earlier.

Nah, Wesley was always kind of an inexperienced looser in waaaay too deep, and that counts for people as well as occult stuff. Fred was probably the first girl he ever met who was both into the same kind of weird occult reading hobby and also, you know, attractive. So it makes sense he would sperg out over her.

What's weird is that his infatuation carries over after he become Punished Wes and that doesn't make as much sense. Then again, I always read that phase of his character as still being kinda try-hard in itself.

Currently rewatching Bones and feeling bummed about plot lines with weakass payoff. Now I remember some of the plot lines in Angel being messed up just because Joss Whedon is a big baby.

In The Gifted, I was expecting her character to get killed off and come back as a super mutant, the show got cancelled.

There is one where Gunn and Illyria go on a road trip and fight nazi demons, and at one point they pass through Fred's hometown and meet some people from Fred's early life, so Illyria pretends to be Fred and makes out with Fred's old high school boyfriend just for the hell of it.
