i don't understand how this guy was ever popular. his "comedy" is so forced and desperate. was this really the style at the time?

Who?? What film is he from?

there was way less content on the internet back then. most of it was far worse than the nostalgia critic.

James Rolfe aka Cinemassacre. He reviews movies.

tfw the host of a comedy show tells jokes instead of explaining why i should feel bad about myself for driving my car

it was a different time, you wouldn't get it

Nostalgia Critic was cringe, yeah, but I consider him the lesser of two evils. His style of movie reviews is much less pretentious and much more well-intentioned than the irony poisoned, overly cynical styles of modern film reviewers like YMS and RLM

Back in the day there was hardly anybody making content for us plebs on the internet, least of all doing nostalgia mining. He had a strong first mover effect cause he was in the right place at the right time, same with AVGN. By the time everybody else got involved, they all became forgotten.

at that time on the internet and on youtube, if you could make"content" with decent editing, clips from a movie, a coherent video format thats mildly entertaining, and put it out on a regular basis, you were destined to be popular on youtube. if he came out now with that he'd get 300 views and called a fag

What film is he from?

Shemale bangbus 3

I never enjoyed the That Guy With The Glasses stable of reviewers, but it's because of this. A lot of us tried to tell the rest that it wasn't funny and it was cringe at the time, but people persisted due to a lack of available review content in video form. He was not universally liked, but he was liked more than someone like The Irate Gamer for example.

Kickassia, it's a Anon Babble cult classic newfag

No, he was always shit. Most of the stuff from that era was terrible, and I watched none of it, despite living through it. You'd have to be a real loser to watch their content, even by internet standards.

Bat Credit Card

it's endearing

Hentai & Yaoi

Did she... you know...?

Are you trying to say there are legitimately funny youtubers who review movies/games? They're all painfully unfunny.
This guy was at least mildly entertaining the way he would review my childhood movies. Sometimes it's just about reliving stuff I enjoyed when I was a kid and that's all it takes.

Jewario definitely hit it

you had to be there

Can't wait for the spoony movie

f modern film reviewers like YMS and RLM

RLM

modern

When I say RLM, I'm mainly referring to Half in the Bag, not the Plinkett Reviews

Pop quiz hotshot is amazing

You had to be there and be the right age. That's how it goes for most things that "aged poorly" according to 16 year olds

Seethe about Doug somewhere else, Lindsey.

You also had to be severely autistic.

just entry level autistic. severe autists hate Doug

I used to watch him, but gradually lost interest. When Kickassia came out I tried watching it but didn't finish it.

People really weren’t talking about movies like that back then.

wait that isnt avgn?

I stopped watching when his videos became mostly skits. I remember sitting down to watch a video, and it started with a skit, so I skipped ahead a few minutes. Then there was the theme song, which I skipped, then another skit, which I also skipped. Then there was a minute or two of non-skit, then another skit, which I skipped, and then the video ended. I looked at the time, and I'd watched a forty minute video in two minutes. After that I just stopped watching. I hear he cut back on the skits later, but by then I'd already stopped watching.

The DIY aspect was part of the charm. Growing up only watching TV it was so cool to see videos made by just some guy with a camera somewhere. I found it really depressing later on when I realized most of these guys just thought of Youtube as a stepping stone to an actual Hollywood career, which then never took off.
