OJ was a distinctly American celebrity, and the media circus around him was big, but nowhere near an international news story like, say, 9/11. Or an A-list movie star like Brad Pitt.

Yeah but I also think Naked Gun is kind of innately American-centric in its humor. The show its based off of was a parody of American detective shows, the wordplays are based on American slang, and a lot of the jokes are stuff like getting the national anthem right. Feels kind of dumb to try and give the Naked Gun international appeal when people who'd care in the first place would know a bit about the stuff it references

We were as bemused that they made a film as anyone else.
Stars and writers don't hold the weight they used to. Not to mention studios killing off the home video market by relying on streaming means a movie lives and dies by the box office now. I forget the exact number, but like 80% of the movies that are successful in the box office are all from an existing IP; so slapping on an existing IP and conforming a script to it is basically the studios begging for any added chance of the movie doing slightly better, even if it realistically doesn't matter. Sort of like Disney with not wanting "Mars" in movie titles, or changing fairytale names to single words, like "Frozen" and "Tangled".
