History of Middle Earth is a really tough read in places. The Book of Lost Tales are pretty incredible although the story just stops at annoying places, but the third one I can't through it's Beren and Luthien and Turin told in Old English poetic metres

literally the greatest series of films ever conceived.
I used to regard Two Towers as the best but over time Fellowship has really grown on me.
It's a masterpiece considering it has to introduce all the characters and setting, set up the next films, break up all the characters onto their own paths, and do it all with drama and two major character deaths.
And all that in only 17 hours of runtime.

The "making of" is probably my favorite thing about the Jackson trilogy. All the little stuff. Like how one of the first scenes they filmed was sam climbing up the secret stairs to cirith ungol, and then filming frodos parts on the same set nearly a year later.
