It's better and more mature than Band of Brothers
It's better and more mature than Band of Brothers
is that rami malek? had no clue he was in this but i haven't watched it since it originally aired
Yea it’s darker and more gruesome, but it’s not better than band of brothers.
But that’s mostly due to issues with its structure.
It's alright but the problem with these shows and war movies in general is that you have no idea what's going on during combat. There are Youtube channels that provide a better overview of what it actually looked like
Channels like that frequently lie in order to portray perfect information that nobody has.
this. what's with all the feelings and thoughts n shit? I just want a breakdown of people moving
That's because most of it is based on a book of what actually happened, written by Sledge after the war when he watched the South Pacific musical in the late 40's and got pissed off.
Every awful thing you can think of was described in that book, everything from American corpses with their mouths stuffed with their sliced-off penises by the Japanese for fun to people throwing pebbles in the half-sliced off head of a Japanese machinegunner and listening to the water-droplet of the pebble splashing into his brain cavity out of boredom.
nooo, war isn't like muh starcraft spreadsheet simulators, i'm going insaaaaane
Yeah, I always take it with a grain of salt but it's probably as close as it gets for entertainment purposes
I really don't like the war genere bros. Most hated: WW2 themed followed by: Vietnam themed. There's ofc 1 exception to the rule: Black Hawk Down.
We've gone over this 1000 times, history let zoomers know absolutely nothing about the Pacific theatre, they don't know that Japan was literally trying to take over nearly 1/3 of the fucking world, and they don't like seeing le heckin Anime din do nothing super kawaii Japs get blasted like the dumb yellow monkeys they are
Yes but another enforced movie viewing should be Tora Tora Tora. Japan only managed to conquer so much because the Americans believed that they were "dumb yellow monkeys". Just as Tsar Nicholas thought the Japanese were monkeys before he got his navy blown out the water.
Japan only managed to conquer so much
They were the only modern militarized country in the Pacific, they steam rolled through every SEA nation
60s and 70s war epics actually tried to help you understand the strategic picture. now it's all the micro picture.
But you see that adds to the amazement of it all. That very few people in the United States thought Japan had the potential to attack Pearl Habor over an oil embargo, despite their high quality, large and modern navy
any combat situation is a huge mess where you barely know whats happening 20 meters from you. Just not shooting at your own side is a significant issue.
not that it makes for good kino
like what?
That new series about US Bombers fucking sucked so bad holy shit.
very few people in the United States thought Japan had the potential to attack Pearl Habor
No one thought Japan would do it because it would be a very stupid and suicidal act that would have only resulted in the complete destruction of Japan itself
Japan's military wasn't underestimated, it was their IQ that was overestimated
underestimating the Japanese was mostly the fault of the British
by the time the US fought them they had demonstrated their abilities pretty well
gtfo normalfaggot redditor this is an anime website
Why is Peleliu so attractive to depictions of the Pacific War? Why not Saipan?
it was pointless and got loads of marines killed pointlessly, so it's dramatic to depict
It's okay to prefer it but there isn't a universe in which it's better
You can even see in threads like these that most people think that way. Noone is discussing the thoughts and emotions of the characters, only the strategy and history of it.
suicidal act that would have only resulted in the complete destruction of Japan itself
... anon i
Yo guys, if you buy The Pacific box set you can enable short historical introductions before each episode narrated by Tom Hanks. There you go.
There's about 50 too many "war is hell" moments in it. Gets old real quick. The structure hurts the show since 2 of the main characters arc are about characters that no one likes.
I like Snafu
Big set-piece battles tend to attract attention.
I like it
The main goal of the Pearl Harbour raid was actually to destroy the 3 Aircraft Carriers of the US Pacific Fleet, but they weren't there that day. If those 3 carriers had been destroyed, the war in the Pacific likely would have progressed much more slowly for the US
Who was the French Canadian guy who had a mental breakdown and killed himself in that New Britain episode? What was he doing there?
which ones?
we need the autistic Anon Babble audience
ausfaila interlude
the dumb love interest thread for no fucking reason
so many sappy bleeding heart moments forced into it
you didn't like Lecky?
Band of Brothers flows much better.
In The Pacific you’re bouncing around between 3 different characters, which vary in quality and pacing. The secondary characters never really get enough time for you to get familiar with them.
Still a great show, but not as good as BoB.
He was arguably the weakest character there because they tired to fit too many other personifications into him imo.
shit we need a char to encapsulate most of the emo pacifist misgivings bullshit from the whole series---- screw it dump it on lecky
He's the kind of character you don't get if you never served in the military.
It wouldn't have mattered if they destroyed every carrier the US had that day, more carriers were built in the next year than in the previous 5 years
The bit of drama set in Australia is nothing compared to the Masters of the Air bullshit. Depicting the RAF bomber crewmen as all assholes for literally no reason.
1 is more than 4
kek
tks 4 ur cervix blue falcon
most of the complaints do seem to suggest that
Depicting the RAF bomber crewmen as all assholes for literally no reason.
Brits are stuck up assholes that thought their shit didnt stink while they were getting buttfucked by Fritz so i think its fitting
The Bongs had every right to SEETHE at the Burgers. Burgers got paid like 5x the amount the Bongs did. A fucking Sgt. was getting the salary of a Bong captain.
Also it wasn't even carriers or Marine landings that won the Pacific
A little more than a year after pear harbor Japan was already isolated from the rest of the world with it's merchant shipping absolutely devasted. Entire islands of Japan soldiers starved to death without a single US troop ever setting foot on it simply because the submarine force sank all their life lines
Rude!
Correct, and the embargo of the mainland with airdropped minefields, too.
I am currently reading thunder below about the USS barb, pure kino
what? really?
but britain was the richest empire on the planet. wouldn't their troops earn more?
Why do people focus so much on Germany's failed sub campaigns and always seem to ignore America's successful one?
Same happened in Australia. Australian soldiers actually chimped out at Burger GIs and there were riots about it. 5x the income meant they got all the good women.
Not to mention the US military could actually provide creature comforts to their soldiers while the Commonwealth ones had to make do.
But they're just there to be seethers. That's it. They play no other role. At least in Band of Brothers it made sense because the British paras landed and were stationed separately to the 101st, and in the Market Garden episodes they're shown as playing their part. In Masters of the Air they're depicted as jealous assholes even though the Brits dominated night bombing so there was no need for them to be jealous.
all the good women.
The good women would stand by their countrymen and not go after Yanks just because they had some spending money.
U-boats going up against the never ending US lead convoy system is a natural David vs Goliath tale. Brave men knowing their defeat is absolutely inevitable but they sail out anyways.
US submarines sinking Jap ships by the dozen is more akin to Mike Tyson beating up children
could subs fight each other underwater?
bongland
richer than America
Pic related
Because it's boring. The most exciting part was that American torpedoes at the start of the war were shit
ran too deep because all of the testing was done without warheads
magnetic setting wouldn't trigger properly and would often explode prematurely
contact setting wouldn't trigger if the hit was dead on (lmao)
The Battle of the Atlantic had interesting swings in momentum. The early phase before the Germans had bases on the far side of the English Channel, then the first happy time, then the Brits getting things under control, then the second happy time, then the Americans getting their shit under control.
The wealth of the British Empire all went into maintaining the Empire and funding the lifestyle of the elites, very little of it was seen by the Average brit. There were still literal slums with barefoot children running around in British cities in the 1940s, it wasn't until the massive social reforms of the post war governments that these issues were addressed
They had silk stockings, which was a big thing.
Here is the chimpout in New Zealand
en.wikipedia.org
i'm so fucking tired of hearing about yanks
Now that the US is voluntarily giving up its position as global hegemon, you won't have to hear as much about them in future.
yokels being racist to they're own allies
get the shit kicked out of them
Deserved.
There is a desperate need for a good film/series about Burma and how awful it was. But there is no interest.
Or Singapore perhaps. China occasionally, very occasionally, makes a good war film about the Sino-Japanese War but most of it is slop.
US was already richer than the British empire long before WW2, and the British had a shit ton of debt after WW1, then they were hit with the Great Depression, then they had to spent the rest of their money for WW2. All while the US was replacing them as the leader in finance, industry, etc.
Did you do the Haka before you made this post?
maori put in their place
based
that episode where they liberate a jewish death camp in Okinawa
Was that really necessary?
I found The Pacific quite boring, and didn't really like any of the characters or storylines
love me marines and the island hopping but i wish the lesser known stuff like the new guinea campaign and burma would come out
jungle warfare is one of the most difficult battlefield you can be in
It is crazy how much marines in 'nam borrowed from Okinawa. I guess that had no fucking clue what to name all the things they saw they just regurgitated all the stuff their dads has said in 1945.
This NEVER happened
Who cares as long as it’s historically authentic
Yeah Burma was awful because the Japanese were the ones with the upper hand in most cases. Brits/Commonwealth troops would be surrounded on hills and have to defend whilst dying from malaria and contaminated water on a hill whilst the Japanese daily banzai charged and shelled the hill. At least the British had Gurkhas who would famously become "tigers" as per their warrior tradition and go out on a head-chopping rampage with their kukris.
No Band of Brothers type show about Africa in WW2
I want it so bad.
dog bless
Africa is kino as fuck. Both the Norther parts and the sub-Saharan stuff, especially that sweet period of Euro colonialism.
I think the Italians tried that once. As you can expect nothing really happens in it.
It's a 9/10, only dragged down by Australia.
these are stories about individuals though, and individuals in combat have basically no clue what the larger picture is, even 50 meters away from you can be something totally different
individuals in combat have basically no clue what the larger picture is
That's why Generation Kill is so good. It never leaves the PoV of Rolling Stone
based japs
A North Africa show would be insanely kino
Sledgehammer's story > Band of Brothers > Leckie's story > Generation Kill > Basilone's story.
Son of a bitch those are Jap tanks...
Retarded japs rejected an agreement acknowledging japanese dominion over korea and manchuria in return for full withdrawal in china, they deserved it
That was mostly tank battles. And unless someone is willing to make several hundred replicas of British Cruiser tanks and Panzers it'll not work out.
is Shattered Sword any good?
Burma and how awful it was.
Is this the one where the japs had to eat themselves because general nip didn't believe in supply lines?
CGI dude
Brits dominated night bombing
Brits only ever did night bombing for the majority of their strategic campaign, so the talking shit to them for doing the 'safer' missions is understandable and even historically accurate
American torpedoes at the start of the war were shit
you sink yourself with the ever too common circular run
I think it is, whenever I see him anywhere else I immediately think of private SNAFU
you know it wont have stop there mate
Yes, combine that with trekking through incredibly thick jungle bushes, a myriad of exotic tropical disease which will infect each man at least once, unrelenting heat and then comes the monsoon which will slog everything up
It's really interesting how every theater was pretty much completely different than every other theater. An Infantryman in France/Austria/Belgium would have a completely different experience than in the Pacific, or Burma, or North Africa/Italy
Because you fucking retards don't anything about it
What island are they invading?
Huh? I've never heard of that, Where is it? Above Australia?
Why are Americans invading an island right above Australia?! Is Australia Japanese?
Where is Hitler? I thought this was WW2
Fucking idiots
That costs money. It's cheaper to just film some actors talking and have all the important stuff happen off screen.
Then watch a documentary, not a story
It's really interesting how every theater was pretty much completely different than every other theater.
Almost like it was a world war that took place across the globe....
Mopping up in western Europe would've been a cake walk compared to taking islands from the japs though.
If you're a bong then you're a retarded hypocrite
ruins your show
unironically i say this as a history nerd the SHOW is SHOWING the EMOTIONS of the CHARACTERS. It doesnt actually matter where they are, its just a setting for the drama. You should know better being on Anon Babble, go back to Anon Babble if your giga-tizzm's gonna act up
Lebec, based on a Canadian replacement officer they called "Commando" who volunteered to join join up with the US marines, I assume to get a change of scenery after being involved in the disasterous Dieppe raid in Europe
IRL he did not blow his brains out but instead got shot in the leg and later died on Peleliu
lmao
That's odd. How exactly does a British/Empire soldier volunteer for the Marines? I know that officers in foreign armies could volunteer for British SOE service.
MC was an egomaniac. Imagine writing a book like this where your character is just instantly loved by everyone around you for no reason.
