Dads and Lads Edition
/who/ - Doctor Who General
What's your controversial Doctor Who take?
RTD1's quality was far more consistent than Moffat
I just followed this guide on Reddit and downloaded the episodes in bold.
RTD is racist
He was the only guy to give us a Black Doctor
Also a gay Doctor
Also an interacial lover Doctor
controversial
In his first episode he introduced ONE black character who then immediately got overpowered by a wheelie bin, emasculated, and then cucked.
My Series Ranking:
3 > 5 > 4 > 6 > 8 > 9 = 10 > 7 > 1 > 2
Note: Ranking of total seasons is not the same as ranking of Doctors or Peak Stories in said seasons
Thank you for attending my TED talk.
Look what he did to Mickey, Martha, and Belinda. Just because he chose a black doctor doesn't mean he actually likes or respects them. Also sexual orientation isn't a race.
Fuck, I just forogt about his trans character too
These women literally killed Dr Who. Nobody wants this level of male gaze bait shoved down their throats.
BIG Chocolate Boobs! Rest your head on them as Varada cradles you in her arms.
Bait used to be good
I know this is a meme but hot women existing is not inherently tailored to the male gaze. What do you want them to do, wear burqas?
Gatwa > Baker
Indian women crave white cock. I'm a fucking loser lowest common denominator white man and the only women I've ever had hit on me were Indian.
I'm rewatching S1 (2005) and its insane how much better the character writing is compared to today.
When did Russel lose his ability?
Ah yes, the POC from the medical field who gets sidelined by a white blonde that RTD goons for. Besides having a family, what's her characterisation? At least as bad as Tegan was, we knew what her fucking personality was. Belimda is just female Ryan, a competely pointless companion.
What's up with OPs not putting in backlinks?
That's not controversial, it's just retarded.
Leela is not sexy ,she is cute.
Less episodes
It would be a start. Their personality shouldn't be how they look. In fact they should be a fuzzy blurred object on the screen, to prevent men from being distracted by what they say and do (which btw should be displacing the Doctor and becoming the main protagonists).
Are you saying it's harder for him to write less?
Her smile keeps me going.
i'm a dumb council slag, my interests are chips and ringtones
wow peak writing
It's crazy how Rose immediately feels like a real person but Ruby feels like somebody playing a character.
I am not sure how much of a hot take this is but, NuWho was never sustainable.
funny, I just started S10 and that's literally the plot
i luv chips
i keep feeding this bird i like chips. it's perversion.
she got fat.
i just luv chips.
She's a 19 year old council estate lass who dropped out of school. Tell me how that is in any way an inaccurate portrayal.
Ruby's real to me, dammit!
Even before 15th, the Doctor in NuWho was not stoic enough.
Ruby is an object of lust. Gibbo is a terrible actress.
He wasted 5 episodes on the UNIT spinoff.
What is on that list?
Steven Moffat was the BBC's star writer in the 2010s and now nobody even knows what he's doing.
Doctor Who S5 and Sherlock S1 was peak.
I actually like that he isn't all stoic though. That's one way to show the Doctor as human even in classic who.
TFW she sees a Caucasian American football player from Wisconsin who's 6 foot 4.
She's a curry bunny btw
She looks like a Wallace and Gromit character
I dislike it when the Doctor is goofy. It makes it seem like he's not funny, and you're just supposed to laugh at him being goofy. Capaldi is one of 3 Doctors that were actually funny and earned it.
A Doctor Who showrunner should be no older than 50.
RTD and Moffat lost their touch because they no longer knew what "it" was.
An entire episode spent trying to cram a plus-sized Jodie through the Tardis doors.
Would have been a great bonding moment for the senpai. A real bottleneck episode. A lot of MEAT to delve into there. Dyspraxic Ryan pulling from the interior, tumbling into her vast cleavage. Yas pushing the ghost-monumental behind. Poor Graham probably crushed underneath somewhere, his cancer-riddled body still trying to carry the entire episode. The music swelling with her confused, autistic oinking.
What problems could have been solved with only the odd nip over to KFC.
To jump of that list from Reddit, Douglas Adams' writing for Doctor Who is nothing special and merely gets praised due to him being known for Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and to a lesser extent Dirk Gently. He was a shit script editor. Shada only has the reputation it does as it was unfinished. The Pirate Planet is one of the weaker stories in The Key of Time. I like City of Death well enough, but again so much of that praise I see just seems to be muh Douglas Adams and the novelty of it being in filmed in France.
I'm guessing the other two were 3rd and 7th?
Nah, Tennant and Smith.
I'd like to -curry favor with her, 2bh.
When was 7th funny?
That wheelie bin was an Auton and of all pseudo-companions Mickey has about the best ending.
Would be fucked up if they announced RTD and Ncuti are leaving on Saturday, and that Moffat is coming back.
First half.
Moffat returning would be really funny
It can just become hollow if the Doctor is wearing his heart on his sleeve. It is more impactful when a less emotional and more measured Doctor does show anger, sadness, fear, resignation etc.
When he exploded Skaro that one time. That was hilarious.
Oh you meant that. Then yeah I had that issue with 5th
By fucked up you mean absolutely based?
hate me cause you aint me bitch
why do you guys still watch this show when it's evident the people making it despise their own nation and audience
I like Mark Gatiss.
The Guardians of Time, the Animus, Fenric, the Gods of Ragnarok, and the Nestene Consciousness have actually been retconned as Great Old Ones and/or Elder Gods in some novels.
This is your official LOVECRAFT DOCTOR WHO Announcement
Hammers nails into his nose
Was more convincing as the Doctor in his first season than 10th and 11th
Still liked despite his seasons having the lowest viewing numbers
Best Big Finish stories
McCoy bros keep winning
There is probably only about 5% of people that post in these threads that actually watch any of the new stuff. Everyone else is just shitposting, talking about old stuff, and getting updated by the 5% that do. Of that 5% I take it they are just captivated by the trainwreck, hate-watching, or have fun laughing at it.
Most of the Lovecraftian stuff is over in the expanded universe with the Great Old Ones. They're Time Lords from the previous universe that managed to survive it's collapse, when they emerged in our's, the differing physical properties granted them power. Books that feature them include White Darkness, All Consuming Fire and Millennial Rites. The last of these also states that various Doctor Who villains are Great Old Ones. The Great Intelligence is Yog-Sothoth, the Animus is Lloigor, Fenric is Hastur and the Nestene Consciousness is the spawn of Shub-Niggurath.
I'm not British so it doesn't affect me lol
RTD never produced this:
youtu.be
Is not The Great Intelligence supposed to be Yog-Sothoth or something. Even that being a retcon identification, just the core concept of the Great Intelligence is Lovecraftian.
There's nothing wrong with novels, I have specific issue with the novels which make established Villains into Elder Gods.
They just make the world less interesting because it's not "the universe is full of unique and diverse beings", it's "every single villain of a certain scope is actually only this one thing, or the child of one".
It's the categorisation of unique characters, then putting them into one box. When you can do more and it is much more interesting when they are allowed to be their own thing. The nestene being a weird alien hive mindish thing which controls plastic, a interesting mystery. The nestene being the mid of Shub-Niggurath, oh actually it's just an old one so there's no mystery. It's just that one thing now.
Also I don't stand fully against any lovecraftian things showing up. It's just, I think they're generally used in a uninteresting way.
Do people actually like S17? Everybody shits on S18 for 'ruining' the Doctor and making it too boring but S17 was awful. Love Baker but the show was in a decline from S15 onwards.
The problem with cosmic stuff in Doctor Who is the franchise cannot just leave it alone. It is not enough that the Doctor can best the devil once, he has to do it again. Something mysterious? Here is a bunch of new information that explains the mystery.
but they hate whites above all
Pretty sure OP is the same coomer retard who kept making early "booby cumday" threads last year too
I refuse to leave something unfinished.
Didn't she quit youtube
This isn’t a controversial take among average viewers. In every convo I’ve had IRL, most people remember Tennant’s run more fondly than Smith’s (and most stopped watching sometime during Capaldi). Some anons claim it’s bc normies didn’t get Capaldi, but really it was the massive quality drop-off that started pretty early in Moffat’s era. While I think Series 5 was the best season of the entire show, the writing dropped off in Series 6, and was pretty shit by 7 and never recovered. But Series 1-4 was very consistent, even if 2 is weak in hindsight.
RTD had a clear vision for the story and the Doctor’s character, while Moff lost the thread after just 2 seasons.
The best thing to come out of the current gen or Doctor Who is the 24/7 livestream Dugga Doo shitpost.
I think Moffat is a better story writer but he clearly had no interest in season long arcs.
Shout out to Murray Gold. The Rani's theme is pretty good.
nice photoshop job big finish
Thank you. Buy our box sets!
Without getting into a debate about its quality, the only serial in S17 that has widespread acclaim is City of Death. You get some people that lionise Shada, but as said I think a lot of that just comes down to mythical reputation of it being unfinished and by Adams - I do not think it is bad, but it is not a masterpiece. The general attitude to Destiny of the Daleks is it is mediocre at best, with perhaps the most popular thing from it being Romana's costume. The Creature from the Pit, The Nightmare from Eden, and The Horns of Nimon are widespread seen as bad - bad writing, bad effects, bad acting. So of S17 you have 1 popular story, 1 whatever story, 3 widely considered bad stories, and 1 story that was not even finished.
S18
There is plenty of legitimate criticism that can be levelled against JNT, but Tom Baker needed to be reined in and the production in general needed refreshing. JNT did that. If JNT left the show when Davison left he would be far better remembered as the man who stopped it spiralling in the late-4th Doctor era and stabilised/recovered it through late-4th and in 5th. As for actual serials in S18 I would not say there are any standout Classics but, the quality overall (in both writing and technical production) is superior to S17 and the entire season does have a suitable feel/theme of entropy to it.
I do not care for Murray Gold.
I'm trans btw if that matters x
No they don't.
What new exciting stories have you got planned?
How do you know?
in S18 stories like The Leisure Hive and Logopolis are absolute nonsense pretending to be smart
Yeah this is basically what happened. If you track it series by series it's very clear. S1-S4 all followed the same basic formula - introduce companion on Earth, go to past and future in a few lightweight episodes, then come back for a two parter to kick off the momentum, then some character focused episodes in the middle, a slightly out-there second two-parter (usually the best), a couple of cheap or Doctor-lite episodes, and an explosive finale. All in all, fun to watch.
S5: Honestly kind of the same, and I think most people were still into the show barring the jarring aesthetic shift. It very much feels like a series with its roots in RTD1, it follows the same formula. And it's good for the most part, better than S2 and S4 if we're being honest.
S6: This is where Moffat lost people. It didn't start off so badly but we were wondering when it was going to get going and then we got Let's Kill Hitler. Cool concepts but the mystery/arc whatever was a wet fart in the end with a terrible finale. Also the scheduling and split series fucked with people.
S7: As above, except le impossible girl means we see the canon get raped. If not for the 50th Moffat never would've got away with it. Rings of Akhaten speech and Smith's acting is the only thing redeeming this era.
S8: I like Capaldi but this is basically just S7 with a less likable lead. And THIS is where the majority of viewers gave up. "It's not getting any better, I don't like the new guy". Can see why, because even the good stuff like the finale is just miserable to watch.
S9: It's really good, even if you don't like Hell Bent. Basically everything outside of that and Sleep No More is good. But you can tell they course corrected with Capaldi a bit too hard and it was too late, they lost the viewers.
S10: Woke creeping in, nobody was watching so even the good stuff in the Doctor Falls got ignored.
4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th Doctors team up with River Song and Missy to defeat the Kandyman. Cheers!
Wasn't Adams working on both at the same time?
Thoughts on S16?
I like S18. It has a weak beginning and end, but I'm fond of the E-Space trilogy. It has a consistent theme and arc without getting too up itself. It's just a shame Logopolis is a bit of a mess, but even that one has kino moments.
I think David Tennant ruined Doctor Who forever.
Consensus seems to be that it starts off great but gets progressively worse until the finale is pure trash.
Which means RTD ruined Doctor Who since he's the one hired, then fired, Ecclestone, leading him to have to find Tennant at short notice.
Moff got too fucking busy with who, sherlock and the tintin movie ontop of his top heavy position as being showrunner of who which imo should be diluted into different positions. Had he focused solely on who his era may have been so much better then it was.
Tennant is the only reason Doctor Who didn't take another 16 year nap
Ribos Operation
Very slow start. Story wasn't engaging. Probably the worst of the season in terms of storytelling.
The Pirate Planet
Pretty good. Episode 2 and 3's cliffhangers were great
Stones of Blood
It's good until the space prison shit.
Androids of Tara
Shit.
The Power of Kroll
Eh. Good monster though.
The Armageddon Factor
Probably one of the darker yet more interesting 4th stories.
Better than S15 (though Horror of Fang Rock is probably the best of all the serials in S15 and S16). The actual Key of Time is a rather irrelevant: it is a season arc in the loosest sense. Serviceable mediocrity is perhaps the way to describe it. The most interesting thing is the introduction of Romana as a character. Nothing to actually do with the quality of the season itself, but weird choice to bring back the Guardians under Fifth.
The consensus I see is The Pirate of Planet is great and The Power of Kroll is shit. Personally I do not think The Power is Kroll is as shit as some people make out, though nor do I think it is great, though I get why may dislike. What I do not get is why The Pirate Planet is considered to have such a good reputation - again, it just seems to be repeated common wisdom that is jut born from it being by Adams. The Androids of Tara is my favourite of the season, and I also like The Stones of Blood and parts of The Ribos Operation.
How are the novelizations?
Moffat tried to do what RTD did but he isn't a workhorse like RTD. He's a more creative guy who needs to be in the mood for writing. He got too big for his boots unfortunately. It's notable that his best series are S5, which was made before he got too busy with his other stuff, and S9, which was when it had quietened down and he knew he was on the way out soon so he tried to end on a high (same for S10). Everything he did between 2011-2014 really suffered.
Rusty on the other hand might be an out of touch gay egotist but the man has work ethic. He damn near killed himself for 5 years reviving Who and then running Torchwood and SJA too. And he maintained a consistent tone and quality throughout.
Never read em.
The radio version of Hitchhiker's was 1978-1980, the TV series 1981. S17 of Doctor Who was produced in 1979.
I think that era is the most vulnerable to people's fuzzy memories of having watched it as children. It's the Classic equivalent of RTD nostalgia overlooking Love and Monsters. There's fun stuff, but nothing deep.
Yeah. Russel has a higher baseline quality but Moffat has a much higher ceiling.
That's why the best episodes of RTD1 were often Moffat guest stories.
has
had
Logopolis is great.
I love State of Decay as well
He is one of the most cringe Doctors though.
the POC from the medical field who gets sidelined by a white blonde that RTD goons for. Besides having a family, what's her characterisation?
Belinda is the new Martha
I can think of several more cringe. Namely the ones that wear ridiculous costumes instead of a suit.
None of those have ever thirsted after young members of another species
The best thing about S18 is there is a season tone and often individual ambiences within the serials. Yet, if you do not pick-up on that sort of thing, or do though do not just care, then I get why people will find it dull. I think that is all especially true if you come off from the tone of the previous seasons or if you watch the serials not as a season. As for the individual serials... The Leisure Hive is well directed by the standards of Classic (apparently the director got blacklisted from the series for going overbudget), but the story seems nonsensical and is largely dull. Melgos is bad and it seems a waste to bring back Jacqueline Hill yet not bring her back as Barbara. The E-Space trilogy is the best part of S18, although even then it is only State of Decay that I have particular fondness for. I like The Keeper of Traken, but that may just be the sort of ambience it has and my cock thinking about Nyssa. Logopolis seems like even more nonsensical than The Leisure Hive, but I can enjoy it for what it is. I think all of this just gets down to how Tom Baker had stayed in the role too long.
They weren't based
If you count the Morbius Doctors, the Watcher works to sort of explain how the Doctor could regenerate again after his last life.
It would be the perfect occasion to introduce a new time lord: THE ARCHITECT
Tegan
bad
i'd crush flip's box
see I like this idea but instead of fat she's around 10 feet tall
Incredibly based casting suggestion. Imagine the companions... girth.
i think jenna would give the best joi
her voice suits it
Doctor Who dies....TOMORROW!!
Night night!
Like a tranny
Close, RTD actually hates disabled people
Ignores non-physical disabilities
Makes deaf person an evil selfish manipulator
Non-physically disabled individuals treated as evil like Luke Rattigan
Created John Lumic (Wheelchair Villain)
Created Max Capricon (Wheelchair Villain)
Removes disability representation by turning Davros into a generic Nazi
Makes the Tardis wheelchair accessible and then doesn't allow anyone with a wheelchair onboard
Singles out a fan who has a Wheelchair, sticks him in an episode where every character talks about how the world hates them
Has production member bring fan to the Tardis, but he can't go on it as the set is 'under repairs'
I'm alright with it ending. It's been a disaster for nearly a decade (Heaven Sent was the last one where it felt they cared)
This audio is five years old.
> Non-physically disabled individuals treated as evil like Luke Rattigan
was he meant to be an autist
Luke Rattigan, Adam Mitchell and Elton Pope are the main ones that spring to mind at the moment.
Clive Finch I'm sure some will mention, but he just was meant as a jab at Doctor Who fans.
I remember that it came at the height of the Summer of Floyd. Insane to think it's been five years already.
