He was literally everything wrong with the Jedi order. No compassion, tied up in rules and bureaucracy rather than studying the Force, allowing a Sith Lord to gain power right under his nose.

I think George was very aware of what he was doing. I mean it wasn't subtle but the jedi had long since lost their way and George hammered that point home.

He wasnt at all defeated by palpy in the lightsaber fight, Mace kicked his old ass and didnt take his time about it, he only hesitated after having sheev disarmed and on the ropes. He just got literally disarmed himself by Ani after that and got himself zapped for not driving his saber through the geezer skull immediately.

Palpatine threw the fight just before anakin walked in the door. Mace was on the back foot the entire fight.

Isn’t this like hotly debated or something, whether Mace was actually winning or if it was all a ploy to finally get anakin to fall.

The novel implies Mace was winning but that's not how it's portrayed on the screen at all.

If you look closely he has BMF on his lightsaber hilt and he actually used that saber in the movie. His excuse for using purple was so he could see himself in the Genosis fight in the sea of blue and green.
