It was only ever very lightly "grounded", the cordyceps in the game doesn't really act like it does in real life other than taking over creatures, in real life the controlled bugs are quickly made into sources of spores to propagate, they don't walk around forever mutating into other forms.

I haven't watched any of the show but I talked to my friend about it who's watched the whole thing and I'm convinced they've bastardized the story by mainly moving all the flashbacks around to be one giant flashback episode instead of a bunch of individual memories that Ellie's having as she's on her quest for Revenge. Ellie's significant part of the story is mostly over at this point aside for the end and they've already fucked it up this much. I'm sure they're going to fuck up the ultimate ending by moving some stuff around or adding some dialogue or something that kind of trivializes something. They've already done that I'm making a flashback that was essentially the last scene of the game happen the last episode. The story was all about subtlety and very specific facial expressions and dialog that infers things. They're not trying to adhere to that at all and it's kind of changing the tone and flow of the story. I don't like it

Two things were ambiguous about the ending of the first game. First is whether the vaccine would have even worked. Second was would Ellie have gone along with it if she had known. They already gave the answer to the second part in the second game, so I'm not surprised they are removing the ambiguity of the first.

Unpopular Opinion: The Last of Us story was always flawed, strange, and overhyped. The Joel–Ellie relationship starts off with Ellie treating Joel like a creep. Joel, meanwhile, grows to see her as a daughter. That dynamic alone creates a lot of awkward, uncomfortable moments. Even up to the end, rather than accept her position with Joel as her guardian, Ellie views Joel with suspicion and resentment, despite his love for her.

The real break in the story comes when Joel who is basically a serial killer, the TV canon ending goes with "Joel has to kill every doctor to get his daughter back selfishly". The Good Ending of the games is just Joel kills Abbys father and then gets his daughter back and kills nobody. He regrets it, sure—but still does it, and tries to live with it.

Only after Joel is brutally killed does Ellie begin to see any value in him—then goes on a path of violent revenge. Instead of grieving and moving on with Dina to raise a child, she embarks on a vengeful rampage for a man who did deserve consequences for his actions.

What’s odd is how fans were outraged by Joel’s death, painting him as a great dad. But he made a selfish choice that may have doomed humanity and took out most of Seattle’s medical staff in the process.

In the end, Ellie becomes a basic serial killer herself going all over the Northwest killing everyone in Abbys crew. Yet the story wants us to see her as a relatable human doing what anyone would do. Abby, however, lost her father and survived hell, yet chose mercy. She’s the real hero. The story would’ve been stronger if Ellie died and Abby used her body to finally save the world. The End.
