Loan company gives you a fat loan based on how much your house is worth (reverse mortgage), thus giving you a big influx of cash to blow on whatever you want.
You are expected to pay this loan back, with interest. Most old people are not going to be able to pay off the load, so they will have to give up their house instead.

Nowadays, most reverse mortgages are non-recourse loans, so they won't be more than the house is worth, and loan payments usually only trigger if A) The home owner dies, B) They move to a nursing facility, or C) they sell the house.
The real shitty thing about these is that people who inherit the home will usually become stuck with the loan payments.
