the idea of "secret agents" doing fancy shit has been dated for decades now
It's an old white people franchise
lord xenu won't be happy with tom's poor performance
my patience grows thin, tom...
This series was reliant on being directed by auteurs like DePalma and Woo, and to a lesser extent, Abrams and Bird, who at least have recognizable styles.
Once Cruise had enough power to have final say over everything, he brought on McQuarrie to turn the movies into stunt slop. Does the average person know what the plots to Rogue Nation, Fallout, or Dead Reckoning were? Probably not because they're just a bunch of double-crosses mixed in with rote action sequences and one decent stunt in every movie.
The best thing about AI is overblown special effects will lose their impact and more grounded films will take over
It would have been over with the last mega flop. This sadly was already halfway shot. They had no choice but to undertake the humiliation ritual of a release.
Well I'm pretty sure it was going to be over anyway, or it should be with a title like Final Reckoning. I think Cruise should move on from Mission Impossible at this point because we will get much better kinos.
Yep I'm a Brad Bird fan I'd say DePalma > Woo >> Bird > Abrams >>> McQuarrie. It lost some style after Woo and, in the best compliment Abrams could receive, McQuarrie took it straight off a cliff after him. It's the most inoffensive, nothing-to-say, middle-of-the-road spectacle thriller slop.
he's been making action slop only for at least 20 years at this point.
in the '80s and '90s he used to act in more interesting projects directed by talented filmmakers, now he only stars in low IQ movies
400 million budget
It has to make at least 800 million just to break even
I don't see how Hollywood greenlighted this unless its just a massive money laundering scheme
No one likes Tom Cruise anymore he's like 70 looking like a grandma and insists on being a badass action star, sad and ridiculous.
The original intent was to have an auteur put his spin on each entry. For whatever reason a bunch of people, including the studio were not happy with Woo and wanted it reigned in.
he only stars in low IQ movies
It's because Tom is extremely low iq himself
In the 80s and 90s he was DiCaprio. Just used his star power to pick and choose the best directors in the business and get them big budgets. I think it was around Knight & Day he sort of gave up.
It seems the problem is they kept shooting for a mass appeal blockbuster rather than letting it be its own thing, which could have been extremely successful and long lasting on its own. Somehow MI1 "wasn't good enough" or too intellectual so they had to dumb it down for a mass audience. As a result we end up with things like "the rabbits foot" and JJ Abrams, etc.
You have to admit he picks good scripts for himself. Dead Reckoning is an atrocious movie. But he had a pretty good track record before that. It was a pretty safe bet that a Cruise movie would be entertaining.
I can't decide which one was absolutely ruined by absolute garbage non stop sequels more, Mission Impossible or Fast and Furious
It parallels the decline of the west, decline in average IQ's, boomers getting old and senile whil still running things, etc
I don't remember the plots to Rogue Nation or Fallout because I haven't seen them since they came out. I don't remember the plots to Ghost Protocol or 3 either. I remember the plot to Dead Reckoning because that one is somewhat recent.
He should of transitioned to the wizened guru advisor to a replacement Ethan Hunt. But no. Trying to hold on to being the main action hero has led to tremendous cringe.
The MI sequels are great, though.
Reminds me of there still being Rolling Stones concerts. Age of actors and politicians, musicians just keeps going up and up without anyone new. It's bizarre. People are afraid of death it seems and unwilling to accept aging.
or 3 either
oh come on, it was JJ Abrams' speciality...
How did this get a 400 million dollar budget when the first Reckoning only made like 500 million.
That's gonna be a massive fucking loss
Dead Reckoning is one of the worst movies ever. And I say that without exaggeration. If you consider the budget and resources they had available, it's really hard to explain how bad it is.
it didn't. they can just declare the number they want to write off their taxes.
The idea can still be executed. But the MI movies feel like 80s movies. Every shot is so cliche it's painful. I just tried watching the one directed by JJ Abrams with multiple A-list actors. I turned it off after half an hour because it felt like they were just farting in my face and saying IT'S TOM CRUISE THOUGH.
I still don't get what the "problem" with Woo was. It was a much bigger hit than part 1 and part 3.
But muh rabbit's foot mcguffin
They tried. With Renner. Then Renner left to go and try and take over the Bourne sloppas.
I agree. There was actually hype for 2. Massive soundtrack too with the Limp Bizkit tie in song. Yet somehow it still wasn't good enough for them. Abrams was the beginning of the end. All he does is kill franchises, really.
Hoffman was such a pudgy fatso with a stubble like he almost always was. Almost always the same haircut too. Thank God that he's dead.
They didn't really try with him though. They did a lazy initial setup but then someone, probably Cruise, vetoed it. Renner would have been fine. The Renner Bourne movie was pretty good and severely underrated. Bourne Franchise suffered as well for holding on to Damon.
I thought the last one was good, definitely will be watching this one. Hopefully, they'll release a dvd box. It's been a while since I've seen the other ones.
only the first mission impossible was good.
Yeah after Epstein it's clear that intel agents first priority is protecting elite pedophiles, not saving the world by doing stunts or looking cool or whatever. They just kill to make sure elite criminals can continue preying on children with impunity.
Nah. It's very entertaining.
I thought the last one was good
You mean Final Reckoning? It's just OK. The action scenes are good, but there is no excuse for 3 hours. Also, the dialogue and exposition is terrible. They literally explain the plot to each other and cut from character to character. It's crazy no one points this out. Also, the memberberries and tie ins to the previous movies were pretty bad. Somehow the rabbit's foot mcguffin with a biohazard label on it was actually an AI somehow (???) not to mention the obsession with girlbosses like the President, etc. Also, notice the torture room scene and chase in hallways behind it was a copy paste from an earlier movie (can't remember which because they blend together) The relatively high reviews for it and Dead Reckoning makes me feel that either everyone is paid off or the average person is completely insane.
was literally the highest grossing movie of 2000
beat Gladiator at the box office
MI2 was awesome and I'm tired of pretending otherwise.
For you. All the settings feel empty. The action scenes are laughable and absurd. Cruise is not believable as a super secret agent.
Dead Reckoning had the worst exposition/dialogue I have ever heard in a major movie. Absolutely stilted
They actually were kind of going in this direction in some of the earlier MI movies, which I liked. It was implied that most of international crime and t*r**rism was done by intel agencies. Some of the last Bond movies were having similar plots as well.
He also went from having prime Nicole Kidman to Ana de Armas lmao. Aging sucks
First one was great, a classic dare I say. Others, don't care.
I agree. Which is why I can't understand the positive reviews. It makes me think most people are now insane/ and/or there's just massive review corruption now. Maybe a combination of both.
Nah. Objectively it's an entertaining movie. Definitely doesn't feel empty and the absurdity is part of its charm. Cruise is perfectly fine in the role, though he's obviously up there in age these days.
The last movie was absolute shit. Why would I watch the second part of it?
Thank God that box office dick riders weren't as common back then as they are now
You didn't mind him parachuting into the train and somehow hitting the villain dead on through the wall? Or the cringe key palming scene?
$400M
Wtf did they spend it on I know it's Tom Cruise and all but still that's a ridiculous amount to make the movie
Because it's Tom Cruise and it'll be fun to watch in the theater. Not a lot of reasons left to go to the theater nowadays. Probably gonna be his last action film too.
many people here suck his dick and talk about how he's the only legit star left in Hollywood, but in reality Top Gun Maverick was a fluke, Mission Impossible has never been an incredibly popular franchise (even the highest grossing film made less than $800 million worldwide) and every other action slop he has starred in the last 2 decades didn't make a lot of money (most of those underperformed in the US and were saved by the foreign box office)
But that's precisely the point. The first part was ass and it was definitely not fun to watch it in the movies. It was retarded too. I'm not doing that again.
Nope. Was entertaining which is what I expected. Almost every good action movie has some absurdity involved.
Good. Tom doesn't want your money.
or Fast and Furious
Five, 6 and 7 are better that the early films, but yeah, they should have stopped after those
isn't that guy like 70 now
All the settings feel empty.
Absolutely this. They're just segues to the next big stunt.
The entire sequence with Gabriel in the air was completely Looney Tunes levels of hilarious. The arm breaking, the knife in the fuselage, Gabriel's parachute, his fucking maniacal laughs. lmao
Xenu himself helped with funding. It simply had to be made.
This movie was so bad I couldn't believe it. I think we're all buck broken into accepting the unacceptable. This movie needed a few rewrites and could of trimmed a whole hour out of it and it would be much better. Whole characters didn't need to exist. Mission impossible 2 is the best in the franchise it's fun. This is the opposite of fun. Its ass. Very dissappinted.
Ethan Cunt
Pretty much this
It fucks with my head that this series has been going on for nearly 30 years now. Feels like just yesterday I was watching MI2 with my brother and then we rode our bikes and shot at each other with our soft air guns.
Brilliant, Norm would be proud.
plotfag
lmfao
Top Gun Maverick
It wasn't very good either. Main plot was a thinly veiled Star Wars trench run and shooting into the exhaust vent. It had all the same problems that most modern media has, it just had a shill campaign that was able to convince people it was somehow "anti-woke" or a return to tradition, etc. In reality that was marketing. It also benefited from the political climate, where it was seen as some sort of protest to watch the movie. Good marketing.
Yeah, I feel it started to focused too much on stunt and Cruise got addicted to it. These movies always have insane stunts, but the story seemingly went the other way around and got really sloppy.
It was a fun theme park ride. A lot better than the first one.
Well the first one was barely more than a B movie elevated by having cooperation with the Navy. It was Days of Thunder on a carrier.
And the second one was openly a Navy recruitment ad. They even had recruiters standing outside of the theaters. First one probably was too
The black dude that was commanding the submarine was pure charisma, mister.
3 and 5 were good, haven't seen 6, 7 or 8.
Yeah, contrast it to the first one where Cruise was not really the focus. He also wasn't some comic book level action super spy. He was just an above average spy/agent in a bad situation that was relyingon his team. In the latest ones the team is just an afterthought and they don't even seem that competent, especially Benji. It's basically just Cruise doing everything. It's become thinly veiled capeshit at this point.
Watch Severance if you haven't
Stop trying to meme that Fallout "is stunt slop" its the best action movie of the decade. Yes its not the most impressive plot but the ending is great and its got awesome stunts like the beginning parachuting and helicopter chase which is all an ACTION movie cares about.
John Wick is also memorable without having a good plot its not required.
It got A- cinemascore it should have some legs but probably only makes a profit on VOD and various other sales.
Only s1. They ruined his character in s2.
It got A- cinemascor
Means nothing. Modern media almost always gets high ratings. There's some major corruption that's been going on for years. Major review inflation for big budget releases. It's gotten so bad that high critic reviews are almost a reverse-indicator of quality. They tend to hate actually original or creative movies now.
shouldn't have killed the hot british chick and replaced her with some ugly feminist looking hag
The show is from the 1960s.
Just found out that he's the dude I've seeing in Severance promos and all kek
Shame about what said, though. Hope it's not too bad
Well all the memes about him come from s2. But it's because of what they did with the character. S1 is actually good and not a parody of itself.
Doughy chinless 4/10
Is this the best Tom could do? What the fuck? He couldn't get some Anna Nicole Smith looking mink to be his wife? Why has Lord Xenu forsaken him?
it was awful cause you had to sit through 1 and a half hours of boring dogshit before getting to the good part
Uggh did you not see the last 2? At least mi 2 was 2 hours not 3. And the exposition was done via dialogue and setting not just lazy exposition dumps and jump cuts.
How do you think Xenu would punish him
