The original intent was to have an auteur put his spin on each entry. For whatever reason a bunch of people, including the studio were not happy with Woo and wanted it reigned in.

In the 80s and 90s he was DiCaprio. Just used his star power to pick and choose the best directors in the business and get them big budgets. I think it was around Knight & Day he sort of gave up.

It seems the problem is they kept shooting for a mass appeal blockbuster rather than letting it be its own thing, which could have been extremely successful and long lasting on its own. Somehow MI1 "wasn't good enough" or too intellectual so they had to dumb it down for a mass audience. As a result we end up with things like "the rabbits foot" and JJ Abrams, etc.

You have to admit he picks good scripts for himself. Dead Reckoning is an atrocious movie. But he had a pretty good track record before that. It was a pretty safe bet that a Cruise movie would be entertaining.

I don't remember the plots to Rogue Nation or Fallout because I haven't seen them since they came out. I don't remember the plots to Ghost Protocol or 3 either. I remember the plot to Dead Reckoning because that one is somewhat recent.

He should of transitioned to the wizened guru advisor to a replacement Ethan Hunt. But no. Trying to hold on to being the main action hero has led to tremendous cringe.

Dead Reckoning is one of the worst movies ever. And I say that without exaggeration. If you consider the budget and resources they had available, it's really hard to explain how bad it is.

The idea can still be executed. But the MI movies feel like 80s movies. Every shot is so cliche it's painful. I just tried watching the one directed by JJ Abrams with multiple A-list actors. I turned it off after half an hour because it felt like they were just farting in my face and saying IT'S TOM CRUISE THOUGH.

I still don't get what the "problem" with Woo was. It was a much bigger hit than part 1 and part 3.

They didn't really try with him though. They did a lazy initial setup but then someone, probably Cruise, vetoed it. Renner would have been fine. The Renner Bourne movie was pretty good and severely underrated. Bourne Franchise suffered as well for holding on to Damon.

I thought the last one was good, definitely will be watching this one. Hopefully, they'll release a dvd box. It's been a while since I've seen the other ones.

You mean Final Reckoning? It's just OK. The action scenes are good, but there is no excuse for 3 hours. Also, the dialogue and exposition is terrible. They literally explain the plot to each other and cut from character to character. It's crazy no one points this out. Also, the memberberries and tie ins to the previous movies were pretty bad. Somehow the rabbit's foot mcguffin with a biohazard label on it was actually an AI somehow (???) not to mention the obsession with girlbosses like the President, etc. Also, notice the torture room scene and chase in hallways behind it was a copy paste from an earlier movie (can't remember which because they blend together) The relatively high reviews for it and Dead Reckoning makes me feel that either everyone is paid off or the average person is completely insane.

They actually were kind of going in this direction in some of the earlier MI movies, which I liked. It was implied that most of international crime and t*r**rism was done by intel agencies. Some of the last Bond movies were having similar plots as well.

Nah. Objectively it's an entertaining movie. Definitely doesn't feel empty and the absurdity is part of its charm. Cruise is perfectly fine in the role, though he's obviously up there in age these days.

many people here suck his dick and talk about how he's the only legit star left in Hollywood, but in reality Top Gun Maverick was a fluke, Mission Impossible has never been an incredibly popular franchise (even the highest grossing film made less than $800 million worldwide) and every other action slop he has starred in the last 2 decades didn't make a lot of money (most of those underperformed in the US and were saved by the foreign box office)

This movie was so bad I couldn't believe it. I think we're all buck broken into accepting the unacceptable. This movie needed a few rewrites and could of trimmed a whole hour out of it and it would be much better. Whole characters didn't need to exist. Mission impossible 2 is the best in the franchise it's fun. This is the opposite of fun. Its ass. Very dissappinted.

Top Gun Maverick

It wasn't very good either. Main plot was a thinly veiled Star Wars trench run and shooting into the exhaust vent. It had all the same problems that most modern media has, it just had a shill campaign that was able to convince people it was somehow "anti-woke" or a return to tradition, etc. In reality that was marketing. It also benefited from the political climate, where it was seen as some sort of protest to watch the movie. Good marketing.

Yeah, I feel it started to focused too much on stunt and Cruise got addicted to it. These movies always have insane stunts, but the story seemingly went the other way around and got really sloppy.

It was a fun theme park ride. A lot better than the first one.

Yeah, contrast it to the first one where Cruise was not really the focus. He also wasn't some comic book level action super spy. He was just an above average spy/agent in a bad situation that was relyingon his team. In the latest ones the team is just an afterthought and they don't even seem that competent, especially Benji. It's basically just Cruise doing everything. It's become thinly veiled capeshit at this point.

Watch Severance if you haven't

Stop trying to meme that Fallout "is stunt slop" its the best action movie of the decade. Yes its not the most impressive plot but the ending is great and its got awesome stunts like the beginning parachuting and helicopter chase which is all an ACTION movie cares about.

John Wick is also memorable without having a good plot its not required.

Means nothing. Modern media almost always gets high ratings. There's some major corruption that's been going on for years. Major review inflation for big budget releases. It's gotten so bad that high critic reviews are almost a reverse-indicator of quality. They tend to hate actually original or creative movies now.
