Just came back from watching this kino

First time going to the theatres since Dune Part 2 and I liked it. It was a great theatrical experience. Definitely a film made to be seen on the big screen.
Didn't fell asleep long as I thought it would.
It was thrilling and emotionally engaging. I liked that they actually ended it in a great way for Ethan Hunt and didn't pull a James Bond.
The last shot of Ethan was kino.

i think it was absolutely crucial that they didnt pull a bond on ethan for it to be kino

So the shitty writing and exposition dumps didn't bother you? Cutting from character to character having them flatly explain the plot to the camera in between action scenes didn't bother you? Such lazy (or incompetent) writing. Also you didn't mind the shot for shot remake of the torture room scene and running in the hallways outside. Exact same room in an earlier movie. Or hanging on a plane yet again. I wouldn't be surprised if they reveal years from now that the dead reckoning/final reckoning movies were written by AI as some sort of meta experiment.

Also every single hero other than Ethan was female. Female president, female carrier commander, female officer that trusted him to give him the mission outside the President's helicopter, contrasted with the dumb impatient generals.

Now that you mention it. I did hate the ugly black woman as president and seeing her ugly face on the big screen almost made me vomit.
I didn't mind the other women because they were attractive.

1 > 4 > 6 > 5 > 2 > 7 > 8 >>>>> 3

Still, one of the best movie franchises of all time. This last one was really full of itself though and McQuarrie's style was already perfected in Fallout.
7 and 8 were lacking and full of circlejerk.

i don't believe you, provide a recipe for a dish using hunt's tomato sauce and i might

I like that you ranked 3 so low. Abrams slop deserves a low rating. However ranking 7 anywhere but last is incomprehensible. Awful dialogue and action scenes to the point of absurdity. 3 was bad, but at least there was some competence there. 7 was almost like a parody in how bad it was.

Can someone explain to me why they had that secret farewell at the end where they couldn't even talk to each other?

3 was bad, but at least there was some competence there.

Yeah it's watchable enough. Best thing about it is Philip Seymour Hoffman makes a great villain.

Didn't make it 30mins in. Fallout was peak. What a disaster, all the money, no script. How did he learn nothing from Top Gun 2's scripting?

3hr run time

No thanks. I will just stream it at home next month. d4pwv

In these last two movies, there’s a strong emphasis on oaths and almost sacred words. I think at this point in the saga, the end, ‘the final reckoning,’ they’re not really hiding their cards anymore. The entity is literally called the anti-god, so the ending feels like a kind of reaffirmation of ‘we live and die in the shadows

Fallout was peak

I'm pretty sore that Solomon Lane wasn't the final boss.

It's a great theme and executed beautifully. No words needed, just a nod. Full of friendship and mutual love and understanding. I think these movies are the best being made right now because of how simple yet beautiful their themes are. Simply put, they're about the power of friendship in the face of adversity.

For autists, does Ethan have totally unrealistic levels of strengths with how he held on to the planes throughout the climax? Not that it bothers me, I am only curious if the shit he pulled off there is remotely possible

Absolutely.
It’s the oldest cliché in the book, but it’s the one that always works.
The saga has always been about the team, and that’s really emphasized in how Ethan makes Benji the team leader while he goes off on his own for a while. He has to face the other side of the Entity namely the government, with its supposedly good intentions but ultimately corrupted.
It also really made me think of Avatar, which is the best example of another current saga where the plot is as simple as it gets, but all these themes are beautifully layered into it.

Well, when they get to Africa and everyone steps out of the car, I remember how Ethan makes this little gesture, adjusting his gloves, almost like he’s making sure we notice he’s wearing them. It’s not crazy to think that, in this whole conflict between the digital and algorithmic versus the physical and spiritual, something as simple as a pair of gloves helped Ethan hold on tight to that plane.

For me, it's

6 > 5 > 1 > 2 > 4 > 8 > 7 >>>>> 3

3 is the only MI film that I think is outright not good. But I resent 7 and 8 somewhat for how they butcher Ethan's team. I can't believe his team last mission and farewell is Benji and three whos he met last week. I get they had to get rid of Ilsa and Luther because of actor unavailability, but the way they did it was so dismissive especially for Ilsa. Completely ruining two movies worth of great chemistry and build up of Ethan's strongest relationship. The way she is not mentioned even once in TFR apart from the catch-up flashback made it so clear they wanted to sweep it all under the rug and forget about it.

*his team for his last mission

Gabriel was also a bad after a strong showing in the forms of Solomon Lane and August Walker, but he did amuse the shit out of me towards the end when he became a cackling gleefully evil mad man that died like a clown mid-evil laugh

did you like dunc2 tho?

These movies should be making over a billion easy but the last one being hampered by a manufactured phenomenon and trend (Barbenheimer) killed the momentum of the two-parter which should've been truly epic. Now, the franchise goes out in a whimper because of things outside of Cruise's control. It really sucks to say and to see it play out. At least, Tom is back to making dramas again.

Once the Blu-ray is out I'll make a custom version cutting out all the flashbacks. Without them, it may legit be my favorite in the whole franchise. The whole submarine arc is bar none the peak of it. No competition.

It wasn't as good as part 1 but it was alright. The black female president made me laugh, were they banking on Kamala winning? I didn't like all nostalgia pandering. "Remember the villain from movie 1? I'm his son." "Remember the Rabbits Foot from movie 3?" "Remember that guy who took your knife from movie 1?!"

HE . IS . A . SCIENTOLOGIST
i wish this kind of spacing had the same effect for christians
HE . IS . A . CHRISTIAN

yeah bro it really sucks
who the fuck remembers barbie and oppenheimer, both mid movies, i mean at least tom and mcq had a good payout with maverick since it cracked the top 15 of boxoffice alltime so its not too sad, but yeah i wanted both of these movies on avatar 2 levels of box office

I couldn't stand the dyke in that segment but otherwise? The action is supreme. Also, I loved the jumpscare when Tom found the dead crew members of the Sevastopol. Lovely little moment.

What does Mr. Cruise do now? He's in some upcoming Inarritu film, who is an artfag director. He's getting on a bit now, maybe he goes back to smaller drama films in order to try and bag an Oscar.

He has about 5 projects in active development, he's working overtime. He's doing Deeper (look it up), the Inarittu movie, a SpaceX movie, a 70's R-rated thriller and he has two more projects with Warner Bros.

Definitely a film made to be seen on the big screen.

I agree, it was definitely worth bringing out the HDMI cable.

It's almost 30 minutes without dialogue. The only 2 word said are "torpedo tube" and they could have done without them. And the way it transitioned out of it. Absolutely supreme. Was genuinely impressed (and at the edge of my seat for the whole thing). It plays so well with perspective, dutch angles, claustrophobic suspense, rotations. Even the stuff that preceded it, like the way the waves reveal the divers when.he jumps into the open sea. Was the moment when you realized that, yep, this is indeed fucking kino.

Take the gloves off, test the bounds of his likeability, make him a villain in something brutal like Dragged Across Concrete (instead of that Jamie Foxx shitshow).

My biggest gripe with the film was how they seemingly didn't even bother wrapping up the loose threads about Ethan's past and that mystery woman that died in his arms at all. They didn't even address it. Just left it there. Remind yourself that they gave the actress a character poster so obviously she was imporrtant but all her scenes got cut.

i will rewatch in imax in saturday but i really thought the final sequence is way better from storytelling perspective, submarine is definitely the big budget moment but i was much more compelled by the bi plane scene

He already did that 20 years ago, he'd just be repeating himself. He doesn't need to be a villain killing and torturing people, he just needs variety of any kind. Apparently, in Inarittu's movie, he's a tech baron ala Gates who wants to stop a natural man-made disaster and Inarittu said it's a crazy comedy and that he was immensely surprised at Tom's range and ability. I'm excited to see that.

Calm down.
It's not even out yet, bo bingus.

It's out internationally

Why do you want to look at men so badly?

Why would I want to look at women if they're not beautiful or seductive and in scenes where they're seducing you due to their beauty?

Giga spoiler comment dunno how to do the spoiler tag thing.I did the viewing. I am dissapointed. The story was a complete mess. The movie is very long. And let's be honest they could have easily cut 45 minutes of this film. The two big action setpieces are fantastic tbf. The Submarine one is peek cinema ( even though i think they kind of overdo it by him taking off his gear). The film imho missess one big action setpiece in the first hour. Very little happens in the first 1,5 hours. The plot with the US president can easily be skipped. Yes yes.. Nukes and all that we got it. The flashbacks to previous films were equally unnecessary. I always hate it when they do that. On top of that I would have excepted all of the bs if i felt like the series ended conclusively. I didn't feel like that at all. It felt more like they were gearing up for the next one. Oh and why are we retconning previous films?

My MI rankings:
5 > 6 > 4 > 7 > 8 > 123
I am not a huge fan of the first three. They are watchable. 4567 are much much better films.

They had it both ways. Killing Ethan Hunt off must've been considered but decided against because it would've been cheap and there's no good way to do it and people would've hated it. They leave it very open-ended, giving it a sense of finality while also leaving the door open for more cause Ethan is still alive. But I think this is the end, though. Cruise has a lot of projects in development and clearly MI9 is not one of them. Plus, the numbers MI8 is doing doesn't support making a continuation. Sadly.

Yea.. But they do all the sentimental bs like its going to be final. Make it final, have Ethan end up in a wheelchair or something I don't know. The Cruise is a legend in my book. But if this is the last one.. it's disappointing. The script was very poor.

How does it end? What happens to Ethan?

You're 100% correct but I didn't really mind because the action set pieces were great.
Nothing quite like that dive seen has been done before, and the propeller plane dogfight (although derivative) had some beautiful photography with natural colors and great contrast, an absolute rarity these days.

We can just edit out all the bullshit later and trim it to a crisp 100 min flick.

Not film.

Make it final, have Ethan end up in a wheelchair or something

He's invested too much into MI to end it like that. He wants to leave the door open for the future. If MI8 does well enough, they'll make another one. But the projections aren't good.

Ethan basically solos the entire thing with Benji helping with some of the AI tech stuff. The one and only reason Hailey Atwell's character is in this story is because she can do something that needs a <100ms reaction speed and that's it. Ethan gains control of the evil AI thing and could use it to become the most powerful man on earth but the film ends there.

Don't forget : Ethan was saved by the dyke during his fight with Hagar. Then a female presidential staff overpowered the white guy staff when he tried to shoot the president.

So what does he do with the Entity? Just use it to keep governments in check or something? Like a shadow controller of world affairs?

kek, yea probably not a great idea. Anyhow just make it so that our boy Cruise can bow out nicely. They left it open. Even though they made it all sentimental and shit. Tried to tie it all together.

I dunno about the projections. Apparently this was extremely expensive to make 400 million. Shot during covid.

I went to the last three MIs twice in my local cinema. But I wont be seeing this one again. Such a bummer man. I wanted it to be better. The first hour of this movie is pointless.

he finally transforms into the Mission Impossible
