That said, he didn't really fit into the Tonight Show format, given that his style was too physical and better aimed at a later timeslot and a younger audience. Depends on what you mean by "most people". The reason he was able to do what he did, was because he had a big fanbase among older viewers, while Conan was primarily popular among younger viewers. Conan's problem was that by 2009, young people didn't really watch late-night talk shows, and he wasn't popular among older viewers, so he was kinda fucked. I guess NBC wanted to milk the older viewers for a few more years by getting Leno back, until the format was used up.
I think that's also why so many late night talk shows shifted to far-left political bullshit in the following decade. Young people don't give a shit about those types of shows, but they do love corporate left-wing political propaganda. I guess Jimmy Fallon gets whoever is left, meaning older demographics and people who want to watch a late night show without politics.
