I have seen about a dozen of them. My gf is desi so she introduced me to them and while the majority is slop some are quite good and have soul to them. My favourites were Mughal-e-Azam and Devdas. Indian historical dramas are really fun especially if they are set in Mughal times.
It's a feel-good movie made for people who have experienced the Indian education system. A first-worlder wouldn't get it. The only Indian movies that are worth watching are Ray's movies, but there are probably more Americans than Indians who have watched Ray movies, so not sure if it counts. The only bollywood movie I have ever enjoyed is Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, but that's apparently a rip off of a Ray movie.
That's the same for Japan, Korea, China and pretty much every country that's not pozzed (aka non-white).
