Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999) is a crime drama directed by Jim Jarmusch, starring Forest Whitaker as the title character, Ghost Dog. The film blends elements of samurai philosophy with urban gang culture, telling the story of a hitman who lives by the code of the samurai. Ghost Dog is a reclusive assassin who follows the teachings of the Hagakure, a 17th-century book on samurai ethics. He works for a local mob boss, Louie (John Tormey), but remains largely disconnected from the world, finding solace in his solitary lifestyle and loyalty to his code.

The film’s plot revolves around Ghost Dog’s loyalty to his boss and his moral compass, which is tested when he is ordered to kill a member of the mafia who has wronged him. When the mob turns on him, Ghost Dog’s honor and sense of duty are put into conflict, leading to a violent confrontation. Throughout the film, Ghost Dog interacts with a young girl named Pearline (Camille Winbush), who admires his quiet, disciplined life, creating a contrasting dynamic between innocence and violence.

Jarmusch’s direction is known for its minimalist style and meditative pacing, which complements the themes of stoicism, honor, and existential contemplation. The film’s score, composed by the RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan, blends hip-hop with traditional Japanese music, further highlighting the fusion of cultures and ideologies. This combination of samurai lore with contemporary urban life creates a unique cinematic experience that challenges traditional genre expectations.

Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai received critical acclaim for its original concept, Whitaker’s performance, and Jarmusch’s unconventional approach to storytelling. The film’s exploration of loyalty, honor, and solitude made it a cult classic, and it remains one of Jarmusch’s most well-regarded works. Its influence can still be seen in the way it blends different cultural elements to explore universal themes of morality and self-determination.

Slightly remanescent of Leon, which also came out around that time but in my opinion a lot better.

Lies!
Deception!

Spare the faggot brackets reddit nigger

Jim Jarmusches last good film

Leon is pro cunny though

oh no - someone has come to Anon Babble to actually discuss a good movie! The horror!

Fuck off back to your containment board, chud

The stuff that he does with the sword makes me laugh so hard. Even his scabbard is upside down. I used to teach like 16 years ago.

Poo tang clan are garbage talentless hacks HUURR WE WUZ SHAOLIN N SHEEEIITTT I CAN SAMPLE AND MAKE 4/4 DRUM LOOPS ON JAPANESE MADE HARDWARE IM A GENIUS!!!!!

watched this movie with my dad in 99 as a kid so that day and this movie feel like they both live inside me somehow. my dad bought the soundtrack for me and i used to sneak out of my bed to go listen to it in my closet late at night when i should have been asleep. i've often thought of making a ghost dog manga in the art and style of kazuo koike's crying freeman. i have a little folder with pictures collected for world building and little quotes like "You can return to the past, but no one is there anymore" and "All around the world statues crumble" which ghost dog says to you before he kills you.

This has to be the hottest and edgiest take I've seen on this site.

Based.

This one you should.

Kek

copy pasting a IMBD/AI description

Yeah Whitaker is not exactly agile either lol. But it adds to the character that he isn’t some gifted jap swordsman

Loved this shit back when I was a boy, I modeled my entire appearance and mannerisms on Whitaker.

I only later realized that he's supposed to be an autistic weird loser, not a cool guy.

I did that with a private detective novel. Biggest mistake ever.

leon is actually a shit film. it's pedophile garbage

Ynbaw

I only realized later [infantile black-white thinking]

Holy cringe

I remember hating this when I rented it on DVD decades ago.

You mean you didn’t love the heckin humble negroes rapping to wu tang scenes????

My 70 year old dad told me a couple of months ago, that a coworker he had talked films with, had suggested this trashpile of a film. So I look it up only to see the worst piece of shit I can imagine.

What sorta deranged person openly admits to their coworkers they've watched, and enjoyed, this.

It's funny you say that because 20 years ago I did have more tolerance for and perhaps even some affinity towards hip hop shit in movies.
I just thought ghost dog in particularly felt like some tryhard fartsy IFC snoozefest with an empty feeling world due to not enough budget or extras or something.

He's definitely supposed to be cool

What didn't you like about it?

The entire movie is like someone took a comedy script and played it out serious. Somehow it actually works but if you look at it even a little bit too hard you see its completely ridiculous.

I've only heard of this film from listening to Burial
I know you understand me

received critical acclaim for its original concept

It's a direct ripoff of an old French noir but Americans don't watch shit with subtitles so obviously they won't know it.

I've seen this guy interviewed for the recent Star Wars stuff. His demeanor is completely different from the rest of blacks, he is quiet and polite and seem quite humble. What gives?

It's funny you say that because 20 years ago I did have more tolerance for and perhaps even some affinity towards hip hop shit in movies.

I loved it in the 90s and early 00s. Then they just started making blacks and browns shit in our mouth every day so I stopped liking it.

Watched Branded to Kill recently and it was neat seeing the inspiration for the sink hit.

It's hilarious and his deadpan makes it even better

is kind of hilarious

How does it compare to the Goat, Samurai Cop?

Ghost Dog is absolute kino. It's a hitman cringe cosplaying a Samurai while killing Italian gabagool mobsters.

Rest of his movies good?

"There is something to be learned from a rainstorm. When meeting with a sudden shower, you try not to get wet and run quickly along the road. By doing such things as passing under the eaves of houses, you still get wet. When you are resolved from the beginning, you will not be perplexed, though you will still get the same soaking. This understanding extends to all things."
