The poorhouse was a communal shelter in the town. Where people too poor to have their own homes lived together. White, Black, Asian, Hispanic, Native American. They all lived, worked, played, and dated together. This was decades before the end of slavery and before interracial marriage became legal everywhere. People did not complain about immigration and tweet about racism. They just lived together peacefully. I want to see the movie for that reason. But I'm afraid Hollywood may have made it super cringe and weird instead of highlighting how a Black, an Asian, and a White can just be normal around each other. But that's prejudgment.
