Talking to someone who remembers the old pre-social media Internet will see things have gone off the rails in every way. There's no reason that we shouldn't ahve stringent privacy protecting laws that keep the kind of data mining that Facebook, Google, and certainly all of the people search companies etc...from happening, but we're literally 30 years out of date. Now, there are massive vested interests who profit from all the advertising and data mining and surveillance capitalism who don't want it to change, especially when a whole crop of newfags see all of it as normal - this comes to games, tech, monetization, media, everything. So even when they've not identified the underlying cause, they still see the effects of allowing these technologies to benefit the few at the cost to the many, which gives rise to seeing things like Black Mirror near future hypotheticals.
