I think it's yet another great example of an episode likely written by a disjointed netflix committee. You probably had one side of the writing team rooting for verity on account of her being a bullying victim (and nearly all writers were once bullying victims) and another rooting for the sheboon on account of her being brown; the end result is this disjointed mess where the show seems sympathetic to both characters at various stages in the episode without actually reconciling them at the end, which means the ending comes off as thematically void, on top of being a literal deus ex machina asspull (or in this instance machina ex deo lol)

There are two possible kino endings if you have some imagination:

verity wins, feels even more empty, commits suicide or some other shit

verity gets shot just like in the show, but chef girl gets stuck in that reality where she's a murderer and arrested making it extra fucked up

How was it an asspull? They established pretty early on verity was capable of changing reality. So then when she’s dead, that power can be taken. And upon gaining said power, what is a socially ruthless woman to do but immediately crown herself ruler of all? That flows completely logically from everything that happened prior.

NTA but see , the problem is it's a fundamentally poorly written episode. If the episode plays outas being sympathetic to both characters but then one wins via an asspull, you're left feeling confused. Their options were either

commit to either nathalie or verity being the villain, make sure the whole episode consistently reflects that, and then make the ending cathartic to that dynamic, either by being bleakly cathartic (the villain wins) or optimistically cathartic (the good one wins).

commit to both of them being sympathetic but flawed characters who reconcile their trauma at the very end, change the backstory so that you see a bit more of why nathalie was so cruel to verity when they were teenagers (i.e. she was insecure herself and saw it as a way to secure herself in the hierarchy but truly regrets it or something)

instead the writers did the worst of both worlds. disjointed dogshit.

Her winning and becoming empress of the universe is a gag. It’s meant to be a big absurd moment to cap off a tense episode. That’s the catharsis. It’s not even really a win for her, as Verity discusses at length, because eventually you become bored and cling on to prior insecurities. What’s the story if she goes to jail? That’s just a continuation of the horror of no one believing you, which isn’t particularly interesting since the gaslight has already been explored many times. Verity killing herself would just be another trauma porn episode. This ending shows that Verity wasn’t even particularly wrong about her true nature while also opening the possibility that she too will inflict the same tortures on others once she grows bored.

What happens in episode 2 though is

Ep 4 is a good example that they still CAN do things well. Though I do think they could have done a little bit more at the end to hint about the Throng's actual plans being either benevolent/collaborative as Capaldi believes, or if they're just taking over the human race. There was a discussion with another anon in a previous thread about it where a proposal for for a follow up episode that picks up where this one left off, but overall everyone agreed Ep4 felt like an Asimov story and it provoked discussion.

The rest of the season was a step down from there and sometimes a considerable one, but not all were horrible. Ep 1 was all right, Ep 2 was a giant shitshow, Ep3 was the biggest potential waste of a concept that should have been top tier if done well, but took nearly everything good out of it; Ep 4 already discussed, Ep5 was too little about the tech and too much melodrama that could have been done in a different show plus the whole 'sad man isn't actually the victim here and has no right to be sad' is jarring, and Ep6 was a clusterfuck partially predicated on the stuff from the previous USS Callister ep but a MAJOR fuck up at the end that goes against their own in-universe laws that digital clones behave differently from physical humans they're built upon, simply to make a "nice guy incel isn't actually ever nice, won't be better " point undermining a much more interesting ending.

There's definitely some potential there. I think an alternate version of Ep3 with a completely different lead actor (and related nonsense, like the implication that the 30s actress suicided because she was a heckin wholesome lesbian and the tabloids rumored her to death. Somehow her AI got THAT part of her sexuality despite it not being in the movie, but none of the other AI characters got any of their real world actors foibles too) could have been fantastic. So many ways they could have gone with this.

I think the protag was the bigger issue. Hell, they didn't even let her blackness or femaleness be a factor and had it handwaved away. The nature of love, nostalgia, tragedy , as well as things like why we value old movies and what is taken away attempting to remake or recast them with changes, the hollywood demands for big stars even when they don't fit, etc.. all could have been done much better without the race-and-sex inverted protag who doesn't even attempt to act in the style of the film. If you're going to go about cuckbrained tourist nonsense there's nothing more to say, but what the fuck. A) The issue isn't to say he had no culpability, but that it, especially through the dead girlfriend and the AI stepdaughter, heavily weighted his actions as the most negative ones, as opposed to hers. and B) this was not a good Black Mirror episode. It didn't focus much on the technology and where it did, it did something worse than if it had been structured as something else.

There were plenty of "missed connections" romances where someone gets mad, hurts the other one, gets hurt back, things escalate, and then years later they both realize that mistakes were made which cost them a better path. Had this story happened with just flashbacks taking place between both Giamatti and his girlfriend from their perspective, then showcasing what was "missed" from their perspective that the other saw, you could have a resolution that showed two flawed human beings who made mistakes and how circumstances led to things ending up as they did. Making the girlfriend dead and the daughter-AI arguing tangentially for her perspective, in the context of a eulogy (which already predisposes sympathy to the deceased and usually comes with an implication that lessens ill speech of the dead etc), takes away a lot of that. The fault is posed SOLELY at Giamatti's character, that's the issue, framed at him discovering that in fact everything she did was "not so bad". We didn't need a Black Mirror episode for this, it could have been any tearjerker about missed connections or a failed romance and it could have been done better in that regard.
