I love TLOU2. It’s way better than the first game.

First game is well acted, well presented, and fairly well written, but it’s the most generic cliche story ever told. Except the ending, that did something you wouldn’t expect from a story otherwise so full of cliche story beats. As a game it also kinda sucked.

TLOU2 is so much more interesting, the story is so much more interesting because it’s actually doing something new. Sure “revenge bad” isn’t exactly groundbreaking story idea, but how many “revenge bad” stories have their protagonist (who was previously the symbol of wide-eyed optimism) brutally stab a pregnant woman to death, for no real reason, and then keep going. It’s borderline misery-porn since the whole story is mostly people who are doing fairly well (all things considered), go and completely irepairably destroy their lives when they had infinite chances to cut their losses and go home. The overall core is still kinda the same, Abby gets humanised by looking after a kid, same as Joel did with Ellie. But everything around it is just so gross and brutal and messy. Part of this also extends to gameplay, it’s just way better than first. At least after the 90 minute intro which gives an awful first impression. It’s way more open, with much better combat encounters. Plus the brutality is ever-present, first game was pretty tame when it came to gore and stuff, but 2 goes all in, realistic(ish) gore in vidya is a rarity in modern times. It’s usually either exaggerated comedic, or so old it can’t be called realistic, or mostly just very tame and boring.

I have very little faith TV show will be good. I really don’t think actor for Ellie can pull it off, she was fine for season 1, but “youthful symbol of hope who’s tougher than she looks” is much easier to play than “barely holding it together lunatic on a murder spree, but still recognisable as same person from season 1”.

I don't understand how anyone could think that way. Just the first game has so much more than the tv series, and it doesn't go over the top. It stays subtle. For example, the crust busting in the game is just implied, Bill is implied to be gay, and his lover got killed and you can see it upsets him but that's all there is to it and the game moves on. Doesn't need an entire episode dedicated to crust busting.
What's funny is the tv show took out the subtle stuff even though Bill has as much dialogue if not more in the games during the mission with him in Bill's town than he does in the show, and plenty of character development too but after that episode his story is over.
But another example of the game mogging the show is if you remember the show, as they're in Kansas City escaping they go through some kind of daycare facility and have a short scene.

In the game the entire sequence is its own level with you and Henry / Ellie switching places after a trap in the sewers, the sewers were a vibrant community that went to hell and there's tons of environmental storytelling around to explain how it went wrong, and the guy that led it Ish how he grew from a recluse into a loved part of his community, it's really touching. The game just makes this into a short as fuck pointless scene that adds nothing. They also changed the location from Pittsburgh to Kansas City for some reason when in the game the bandits in Pittsburgh are literal marauders and cannibals who just want to kill you, but in the show they were like oh we need to make these real characters and give them dialogue too, fucking stupid. God the games atmosphere is so much better.

Not only that, but the games develop the relationship between Joel and Ellie so much more and there's a ton of actual growth throughout the story, and tons of dialogue just as you're walking around each map exploring that the tv show completely lacks, small moments of character development and building.

I actually like both games, I understand why people criticize 2 but many of the criticisms are silly. Still, making Abby this super buff person was silly, as was having the tranny kid hat thinks they're a boy, but I did like the cult stuff vs. the WLF and thought it was cool. Seattle was a good setting as well, and I enjoyed that they did open up the levels a bit more compared to the first game, but still didn't go far enough.

The one level where they really open things up and allow you to explore, when you first get to Seattle on horseback, that was a great part of the game, multiple locations you can explore and see some world building and find some hidden items, then they never go back to this format the rest of the game as it turns back into a pretty linear experience that while it has more open levels than the last game, is still fairly linear.

I actually hated the character swap at first, but realized it was by design. They force you into playing this character you want dead, a character that killed the one you care so much about and you're pissed off that you have to play as this murderer. But it's actually brilliant because over time you grow an attachment to the character and start to see their perspective and it's actually well done.

Not true at all for me. The gameplay is vastly improved over the first one.
The atmosphere and environments are incredible, and visually it's a very impressive game.
The hospital sequence with Abby was legitimately terrifying.
