The issue is that Allison in film and Allison in script have a drastic tonal differences.
Allison is supposed to be a weird dirty girl, her appearance is supposed to be concerning and unkempt. She's supposed to be the creepy kid in High School that smells bad and looks like they hurt themselves if not others. All of this is because she wants to be seen and noticed but is afraid to put forward sincere effort and be rejected for it. If she gets attention for being weird and creepy then mission accomplished, if she's rejected and ignored then she "controlled" it. The makeover is her both connecting with Claire and putting sincere effort into acceptances and being vulnerable.
But in execution they gave her a cool look because you don't make your teen comedy movie have a genuinely offputting creep, she looks like she listens to Post Punk music and is weird in a cute artsy way. So she gets a makeover that also looks half assed. And fuckers are still complaining about it to this day.

We just enjoyed the movie and the soundtrack. The characters were classic archetypes and were very relatable.

She could've at the very least looked justifiably unkempt and dirty . The safest option is keep her look but have her be visibly more withdrawn. Have her face obscured either by hair or hood, she wears more layers, when she starts opening up she's literally opening up, during the whole scene where they all fallout it can end with her literally receding back into her clothes. Then in the end she's still got her whole look but she's not wearing her hoodie, her scarf is draped over her shoulders showing her neck. Maybe have something like Claire gives her a headband....but maybe not the one she gets just so you can keep that point of connection and make it even more apparent she's making an effort to keep herself seen.

Of course the average boomer thinks conformity is good and youth is all about finding what niche of society (high school clique) you belong to and staying there. The message of the breakfast club is that just like how America can get along despite being a society divided by class, race, wealth and creed, high school students can get along despite being from different cliques. But being an "individualist"? That shit gets you laughed off the stage. Sure there were some Randians here and there but the vast majority of people we group oriented so if you don't have an group, you're a nobody.
