I was joshing, but on that note, I don't think he's truly a misanthrope. There's a fairly ubiquitous layer of self-hatred to his writing, but it's clear that he shows a great level of empathy for the "victims" in his films in a way that no one that inherently despises humanity would. Just from taking a quick glance at The House That Jack Built and how he portrays the titular serial killer as a loser and a bore, one can extrapolate that conclusion.

In fact, I think his work is best analyzed through a Gothic lens (think Gothic in a very 19th century, Lord Byron sense), where these grand, showboaty, displays of suffering and emotion are simply the default mode of expression. He's an artist out of his time. A jointmaker out of joint (to quote Hamlet).
