It's racist because...uh, black housemaids don't exist, or something

It's the lighter skin on the palms I think.
Hits too close to home, reminds them that they're black.

Clearly a russian.
Mammy characters like Aunt Jemina were used to integrate black characters into the mainstream. It's always inevitable that yesterday's propaganda is seen as offensive.
I can't believe they made a black woman fat and loud wtf.
Black housemaids don't deserve representation because...uh, idk
Is it racist? Is anyone actually saying that now? Sounds like pointless bait to get people to argue.
Our housemaid when I was growing up was Trinidadian...
How dare she perpetuates racist stereotypes
As a kid it never once crossed my mind that she was a maid, I thought she was the owner of the house and a housewife. I guess I had no concept of "the black help".
why does the lady on left look like some African roality
this. I always thought she owned Thomas. not the other way around.
its a racist stereotype that black people are flashy dressers and use hep slang!!!
How is it less racist to just remove the person of color completely? A racist would prefer the cartoon on the right so that they don’t see a nigger and instantly have their day ruined
why did they remove the other cats too?
in that episode she had dressed up for a night out with her friends
I would think she is a gypsy queen.
Based anti-racist racists.
sheieeet look at this big-eared honkey
brother what you be doin up in this tree?
For me, is Aunt Lou
me too
I guess it's more of an American thing
unambiguous good guys who help out Dumbo, some of the only nice characters in the whole film in fact
portrayed as funny and clever, helping Dumbo fly with a little confidence boosting trick
all but the leader are played by an actual black minstrel group rather than having all of them be done with vocal blackface
get the best song in the film
What is the issue with the crows? As far as the 1940s go they're a pretty positive example.
wtf I thought 1966 was still racist
how offensive she’s a maid!!!
what’s wrong with being a maid?
n-n-nothing
Sex with large black sassy angry black women
every black female is required to wear a NASA shirt so you know they’re super smart.
no thanks
Lmfao. Imagine having a nigger for a mom.
JASPAAAAAAH!
1950 wasn't racist, at least not Hollywood.
I’m a dumb ol murrican, and I thought the same thing. I don’t remember there even being any indicators that it wasn’t her house.
They were the best characters in the whole movie. Not including the pink elephants
I never picked up on any of that as a kid either, I just thought they were funny.
Here's what James Rolfe had to say about this situation
As a curator of film I feel responsible to let you know. As much as I recommend Tom and Jerry cartoons, there are some scenes that contain racial stereotypes which aren't funny whatsoever. It was wrong back then and it's wrong now. So that's something as a word of precaution. But as a whole, it's a great show.
redditors look up to him instead of rlm
Where on Earth would anyone get that idea from?
youtube.com
If he wanted to acknowledge it at all, he just had to say “It’s a product of its time”. All that extra fluff just looks like pathetic groveling.
Me too but I'm from Europe doe
At the start of the 2005 Tom and Jerry Spotlight Collection: Vol 2. DVD set, a disclaimer by actress and comedian Whoopi Goldberg warns viewers about the potentially offensive material in the cartoons. Goldberg's disclaimer emphasizes that the racial and ethnic stereotypes present in the shorts were "wrong then and they are wrong today", borrowing a phrase used in disclaimers done for Warner Bros. Looney Tunes Golden Collection DVD sets.
They're literally repeat the exact blesses phraseology that they've been told is acceptable. There was no thinking on their part at all.
start watching it thinking I'm like a funky negro with my green clothes
changes to red and then gold
it's over.
Goldberg has also said the crows in Dumbo should be more recognized for their positives instead of being hidden away as they are
Even Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei watches 'Tom & Jerry'.
IIRC, Quincy Jones said the point of that scene was to be a warning to black people of how ruinous following fashion trends were to their ability to build wealth.
you gotta spend money to make money playa
raycis if you don't hire them, raycis if you do... ere ting raycis
character is offensive because he was scared of a literal ghost and/or zombie
Damn they hated having blacks on screen so much they even removed the other cat
character is racist because he doesn't know he's black
Did she have a fat ass? That sounds like a recipe for a maid fetish.
White dorks are such crypto racists
if I wipe off your boot polish will you die?
my father had a black mammy-style maid growing up in the south in the 30s and 40s. we recently rediscovered a whole trove of old photos from that era. what really strikes me is how genuinely happy jenny (the maid) looked and how much the kids loved her. funny thing is she looked so mammy-ish but she was only in her mid twenties. spitting image of hattie mcdaniel in gone with the wind. she had a black boyfriend who was a drunk, unemployed loser who had beaten her up a few times and my tiny grandmother apparently chewed him out and put the fear of god in him and he left her alone. helps that the family knew the sheriff who was a genuinely violent racist, even for the time. sicced his dog on people, rented shacks to negroes and would abuse them at gunpoint they, for example, got drunk and pissed on the wall outside.
and he was a good friend
