its not woke messaging because the characters aren't one-dimensional vehicles designed to push a hamfisted message
aang
presented as a child and a coward but eventually not only shoulders the responsibilities of the avatar, but elevates beyond what anyone expected (everyone, even previous avatars, tells him he needs to kill, but he shows the world how to bring peace through mercy). still doesn't lose his innocence and child-like nature
sokka
total failure by the standards of his father and clan, eventually surpasses and champions both while still retaining his humility and humour. holds the team together while being the only non-bender
katara
totally insecure after having to step up early because all the elders are away/dead, becomes aang's first teacher while still being a child, leads the entire team avatar while still being a child, defeats a bloodbender but doesn't succumb to being controlled by it
toph
turns her disability to her strength, peak earthbender, invents new forms, dominates her entire discipline. learns the strength of being in a team but ultimately still ends up alone
yes i know im arguing about a childrens cartoon on an anime forum with other weak virgins
