Oh no not at all. Its some Texas bullshit. I've already gone through multiple dealers and it's all the same. Now granted my connections obviously suck but still. It's a different world for weed now. I have 40yo tapes that we watched so many times growing up they should be dust but they are still good. Hell, we have tapes recorded from the tv in EP mode that are still good. Tape rot never happened on any of our tapes. What can happen is the tape getting caught and eaten by the vcr. But you can always repair it easily by removing the bad tape part and sticking the good parts together again with scotch tape. Usually if removes less than 30 seconds of footage.
As for dvds, using a shit dvd player is better since it can't see some of the problems a PC or high grade player would. There's also tricks to see defective dvds. If the dvd skips, just go forward a bit, than go back to the second after the skip and you can watch all the footage that was 'missing' because of the skip. But you need a shitty player for that to work. I use portable players, that way a lot of 'broken' dvds are totally watchable. I tried on a PC and it doesn't work.The weird thing about dvds is that when you have a scratch/skip, it's usually a second but it keeps all the skipped footage looking like it's bad unless you go forward and then back. Then it looks perfect. By going forward, I mean using the go to function, not the fast forward. Fasforward will keep the footage looking like shit.

You also need to clean your dvds. Paper towel with dish soap/some water. Get the excess water out before cleaning the dvd. Then blow on the dvd to make sure if dries without watermarks. Just doing that will 'repair' about 90% of dvd problems, including skips/scratches that aren't too deep.

For movies/shows that aren't available anywhere? Yes. Lots of movies never went to dvd. You could get them on the internet archive, but only if someone like me had taped them when they were airing or bought them when they came out on vhs and decided to share.

I just torrent everything and delete it after watching

To be clear, the dish soap fills in the scratches that were already there and makes the dvd work again. So putting pressure on the paper towel wouldn't help with that. And I just blow on the dvd to dry it.
Anyway, it works perfectly for me. I have cheap old dvds (50dvd packs) that all work perfectly by doing that. But they don't work on my PC, only on portable players (but you can use a higher grade screen to watch them on, you don't have to use the shitty portable screen).
