I am watching TNG for the first time, like 2 later season episodes(measure of a man and inner light) then I'm like 8 episodes into the first season.
This is a substantially more bizarre and autistic show than people act like it is. Some of the creative decisions I am witnessing are genuine outsider art. I feel like its more interesting to think about the writers making the decisions they do than to actually engage with the show. Why is Riker privately watching two clothed women just wordlessly playing the Harp on the star trek equivalent of a tv for like, a sustained period of time? Like that's what he does instead of watching a tv show or something, and he's very smug about it, like they're really there and are miniature prisoners of his.
A lot of this revolves around Riker actually. The episode where he gets Q powers is deranged.
