Maher always let his guests say the stupid, indefensible, extreme things while passively sitting back as the smug voice of reason. Oliver got so caught up in aggressively scolding the camera that he started coming off as a preachy asshole. Jon Stewart wasn't nearly so smug, but he and Maher both play the 'just a humble host with reasonable opinions' shtick really well. John Oliver went from calm-to-outraged brit co-anchor on The Daily Show to outraged-at-everything host of his own show. Eventually just becoming a woke scold yelling into the camera every segment.

Very simpy, Maher is calling out his party's ineptitude and how disatrous embracing fringe progressive politics has been for them while Oliver is doing the same tired ORANGE MAN BAD, it's literally current year! schtick that most people outside of captured progressives see right through by now.
Maher made a meager attempt to adapt to the changing times and shift in the overton window. Oliver is running the same exact schtick as he was a decade ago and even if he had shifted with the times politically his song and dance wasn't remotely fresh when he started his show in 2013.
