The company first sergeant should have pushed for Barnes to be promoted to SFC and had another NCO step up into a squad leader role alongside Elias. Having an E-5 undermining an E-6, and no true platoon daddy screams of failure from the company's head shed. Or if he really wanted the platoon to turn over a new leaf, moved both Barnes and Elias to separate platoons and backstopped the PSG position with an appropriate senior NCO from a stateside battalion/division to give the situation some outside perspective and foster the PL's development in a less retarded way.

At absolutely minimum, Wolfe should have consulted Captain Harris as soon as he noticed Elias and Barnes' growing mutual hostility and not permitted either of them to be left unsupervised without at least an NCO of comparable rank present (it's really Barnes who needed supervision but I suppose you don't want to be appear to be playing favorites).

The reason I suggested moving them around within the company is that it could be done immediately without consulting the battalion sergeant major or another company's 1SG/CO.
And the reason I suggested a stateside NCO was to get a fresh set of eyes on the situation that weren't going to be preoccupied with thoughts about their departing unit's welfare, plus you could bait them in-country with the promise that they'll rotate out with the company in less than a year to increase the likelihood of getting a volunteer and not some company's problem NCO they're just trying to offload onto someone.

That's true, but the problem would be that would require even more paperwork than transferring Barnes and Elias to separate companies. Finding a stateside volunteer would require getting in contact with them (in an age before the internet and cell phones) and then convincing them to accept transfer and deployment to a combat zone on short notice.

Good point. If the first sergeant's lucky enough to have an ops NCO, he could put him in the PSG role temporarily, or even until the end of rotation. I'm only hesitant about headhunting from other units in country because their rotation schedule likely doesn't line up with the company's, but finding a SNCO to fill in for an office role would be easier than finding someone willing to stick around in nam as a bushwhacker while the rest of their unit goes home.
