Executing people in the US ends up being more expensive on account of really not wanting to kill the wrong person. If you put someone in a box for 50 years, and 25 years later it turns out that DNA evidence exonerates them, you can let them out. If you kill a guy and the same thing happens, you can't un-kill him. For this reason, when the death penalty is being sought there's extra layers of appeals to go through and a lot more paperwork involved, which ends up costing more than just putting the guy in the cell until he dies on his own.
If you don't care about accidentally killing the wrong person sometimes you could just say "fuck it" and start executing people as soon as they're convicted, but plenty of convictions get overturned eventually due to new evidence or the real perpetrator getting caught later or confessing, and even so we still end up killing innocent people every once in a while and only finding out after they've died. So, instead, we generally just lock them up unless somebody's really gunning to kill the guy. It's cheaper and easier, and if you happen to get it wrong, you can at least give them some of their life back afterwards.

You vastly overestimate the amount of people that are wrongfully convicted. And most of the time, the ones that are released are not released because they found the actual perpetrator, it’s because some process of the arrest/trial was botched 30 years ago and therefore they get released on principle.
