I think the movie does a lot better than the manga like characterizations, Tetsuo in the manga is cartoonishly evil in the manga and the sympathetic angle for his turn to evil is non-existent he just decides to be evil almost immediately. It's also just a standard shonen with really good artwork. The movie is more transcendental.
