Some are doomed to be fuckups. Drug addicts are nearly impossible to help. Even the fucking lady in this documentary who turned her life around and became an activist against drugs ended up relapsing the moment COVID hit and died.

One of my best friends from childhood became an opiate addict around 16-17. He came from a rich upper middle class family and had all the support in the world.
He had periods of being sober but he would also lie constantly about being sober and the only thing he ever wanted to really do in life was to get high on opiates. His parents put him through every rehab treatment possible, probably spending no joke hundreds of thousands of dollars on him and towards the end of his life he had made them and every other real friend he had out to be some kind of mortal enemy who was just trying to stop him having a good time. Because they were a threat to his addiction and need to self destruct.
You can't understand people like this until you have a personal experience with them. Their compulsion to self destruct is really unfathomable.
In adulthood he became impossible to even be around. He would be the type of guy that you'd just be walking through the city with on a calm outing and suddenly he'd grab a traffic cone and hurl it at somebody completely unprovoked, then get arrested. This was his idea of a good time.

Doesn't really matter what sort of substance it is, the abuse is a symptom, not the core problem. The problem is that the addict themselves is fundamentally a piece of shit, the drugs just exacerbate their trash personality traits and criminal mentalities.
Futhermore, it has nothing to do with being able to handle a high or not. Addicts seek out drugs, relapse a hundred times, lie about relapsing etc. because being a kamikaze junkie who deliberately hurts themselves and everyone around them is infinitely preferable to being a responsible adult and they will choose being trash over being decent every time.
