I want to say something funny but they had him chained on a leash to see how long it would take for him to star and die and because these were military guys that were going to kill the main character and then rape the girls he came there with he unleashed the starving zombie on them. 28 Days Later is a very underrated zombie/disease movie.
This zombie apocalypse seemed pretty easy to survive, just have to survive the first day, loot a grocery store and go live in your basement for a month while the "zombies" all die. The timeframe is too short for random humans finding you in your house while they're scavenging unless you get really unlucky.

I guess the virus somehow rewrites their senses so they only really perceive uninfected people to attack. Its shown in the movie that the infected just sit around and stare vacantly when there isn't someone nearby to attack.
