the issues with the game are so large that it honestly blind-sided me how completely unwilling to give the show a chance people have been.

apparently they may as well have called the game "Daddy Joel The Stable Perfect Player Character Man" as that's the level many people seem to have enjoyed it.

A lot of the game's flaws are the same as the movie Passengers. If the entire first third of the game is played from Abbie's perspective, with no prior information about the game being in the same timeline as Ellie and Joel, then you actually get an interesting moment where the character you're playing as and growing to like finally achieves their mission. Only for you to realise the mission is to kill your other favourite character. You get your shock and awe, you get your conflicting feelings about the character, you get the narrative connection when you switch to Ellie and begin the same hunt you just did as Abby. Instead, you never learn to like Abby, you feel really annoyed about what happens to Joel and then you feel really, REALLY annoyed by Ellie pussying out.
