If you walked away from Downfall after having watched its depiction of Hitler personally urge child soldiers to fight to their last breath before unceremoniously killing himself in one last act of ultimate evil cowardice and ended up, as a viewer, feeling sympathy for that character, you might actually be insane.

I agree with you on a rational level but on an emotional level anon if you watch a movie which spends a lot of time following the perspective of a particular character you're inevitably going to sympathise with that character far, far more than you otherwise would or should. It's the same reason why most people, even the most introspective and humble, are naturally inclined to understand or sympathise with themselves far more than others might.

Might as well bring up this miniseries ITT too. Odd how it almost depicts him as a comic book villain while trying to depict the matter as serious. Until far into the future I think Hitler biopics are going to be burdened. by his cultural image as a boogeyman (as Napoleon still is in Anglophone media), which is a shame as you could make a great character study of him the same as has been done of Churchill or Stalin (Robert Duvall's HBO miniseries).
