One of the best shows ever filmed. Directing, writing, camera work, acting, soundtrack.. everything was S tier. And yet I don't even recall any hype around it even back in a day. What happened?

We posted about this show constantly when it was airing and a little while after. It's hard to establish a vocal fanbase for a show that had one season 8 years ago. I agree, it's fantastic. Not much else like it. Nice to see an actual antihero and not your typical "rogue with a heart of gold" tripe.

It turned out Taboo was a vanity project for Hardy so he could work with his producer dad, a dad who's industry ties were not commonly known resulting in people realizing that Hardy was a nepo baby

This is where I don't understand the "power fantasy" criticism. The vast majority of people I see discuss this show think Delaney is more of a walking meme than some le ultimate badass. It's a cool show portraying an interesting time in history, and I liked the overall narrative but Delaney is kind of a joke and all the people he attracts to him and his gang are mentally ill losers.
This show would be much better if Hardy didn't mumble his lines all the time, I can't understand him without subtitles

that's the jist of the series, guy comes back from the dead, forms a ragtag crew of losers to stunt on the East India Company
Some people get a producer credit just because, but executive producers usually have a lot of influence on the project, often greater than the director. It's a really vague position, but it is definitely not just financing. Big Harv wasn't just auditioning girls and fronting money for movies to be made.
