This is because they get things that you can't simply buy by being actors, constant stimulation, massive self-importance, a sense of relevance and an almost religious ecstatic delirium of fame and adventure, and all it costs them is their health, sanity, souls, and anal virginity. The sort of people who willingly go into this lifestyle are rare and invaluable because they'll pay the price gladly, and if you see someone who sucks at acting but is in everything, it's because he's really good at paying that price.

Lot of actors are bad with money so would have trouble retiring. Some actors end up being smarter and figure out how they can do various companies like there was an actress that started a toiletries company and made more than she ever did with acting.

But even then, you'd have to be setup with the right people to really do those companies because the actors themselves often don't really know how to do much else. So if they want to keep up their standard of living they have to keep up with big movies or always be trying to set themselves up for how they'd retire if forced to. There has to be a level of stress to that.

Then started getting cast in roles as the lead with increasing movies people liked, cocktail, rain man, days of thunder etc.
Interview with the vampire was his best role and jerry miguire shot him to real solo asses in the seat movie star status and he has not fucked it up since then.
Even mission impossible which he did just before jerry migure, well people liked it because it was mission impossible, a movie of a popular TV show, not specifically for the cast.

So to reiterate, he only did 1 big popular movie as lead actor, a successful movie (risky business) before top gun which was so fucking huge it slowly shot him into stardom and household name fame.

Same with dicaprio and titanic but he also had romeo and juliet under his career, which was of course a massive success and put him in the "heart throb" category of actors, which probably got him the titanic (and the beach) casting.
