You've heard that a black snape (henceforth called "snigger") has been cast. The schlock about being "faithful" to the book has been intentionally paraded around in the press. They're NOT going to follow the book and are leaning on the episodic format to minimize fan backlash.
They'll test the waters with the first year. The first year doesn't have much in the way of lore, but they are planning on running parallel, invented storylines that deal with the lives of various students in different years and houses. They're hoping this will help reduce exposition. The weasley house will also have its own ups and downs, and expect book 2 to have a parallel weasley house plot (owing to their lack of finances and seven kids)
They are planning on tightening the rules of magic to remove plot holes from the storylines, which will modify the details of the overall plot. Expect some weird changes in the first season, including the trap door challenges and the properties of the scar.
Quidditch rules have also been modified at JK's behest.
Snigger's story with James isn't introduced until book 3. However, they *will* throw around subtle hints about his backstory via dialogue and set decoration. He keeps a picture of lily in a secure "safe", and is not as abusive to Harry as he is in the books. They are planning on modifying his backstory so that Harry has confused parentage. Snigger and lily did it, but she was pregnant with James' son at the time. Snigger did not know this and Dumbledore sees no reason why he should know.
