They're didn't used to be a lot of A-list actors under 30 before, either. A-list actors only get recognized as such after they they star in a massively popular movie, or they star in multiple popular movies. Most actors don't build up such a reputation before their 30s.

Most people under 30 don't want to be movie stars. Or even actors. Or writers, directors, comedians, artists, or musicians. They want to be celebrities.

Zendaya maybe but even that I doubt. Even the vast majority of Americans couldn't name either of them and it gets much worse outside of the US where nobody has seen either of them in anything outside of Dune and Spider-man. Absolutely everyone knew Arnold, Stallone, Pitt, Cruise, DiCarprio etc.

They don't even compare to Tom Cruise in his prime. Movie stars in the 80s and 90s commanded massive respect without the mass media pushing them so hard. And their movies were usually always box office hits.

I'm pretty sure this is a huge, huge issue. In decades past millions of people would love to be an actor/actress of some sort, and making the big screen would be the absolute dream. And it would form a part of their lives, they would study model actors/actresses to see what was good about them. Now their role models and time is all about social media.

So why don't we hear this point being made? Because it doesn't do anyone involved any good to make it. It'll only get people thinking about how movies/tv are worse than they used to be while it's what they're selling. So the future looks pretty bleak.

Social media has ruined the movie star image. Its ruined the "mystique" they once had. Back in the day (1990s) you didn't have instant access to a movie star with social media/Instagram/Twitter/etc. So there was always a cloud of mystique surrounding them. You had to find out new about them from tabloid magazines or the TV news. Most people only followed their movies in the theater and knew nothing else about the movie stars.

I think what you’re articulating is that the “A List” has changed, because Hollywood in general has lost cultural currency with the death of the monoculture. Have there been any A list actors minted after DiCaprio and Cruise who had the same global reach? I don’t think so.
I do think Chalamet, Zendaya and Sydney Sweeney are all modern A list actors. But the A list itself doesn’t mean anywhere near as much as it used to.

The big Hollywood studios made the deliberate decision to focus on I.P. instead of talent to sell movies because they didn’t like the bargaining power movie stars had. To people saying there were never stars under 30, you’re wrong. The 80’s were full of them. Young people had spending power and Hollywood recognized that stories about them would sell. That’s how we got “the brat pack”. Then in the 90’s and 00’s the focus of television dramas became young people and there was a pipeline of television actors to movie actors. What changed everything was Twilight: they hired no name actors to launch a franchise backed by a popular book. The actors’ fame was incidental because the popularity of the book series would sell it. After the first movie was a hit, they shot the 2nd and 3rd film back to back so as not to give the lead actors an opportunity to negotiate for more money.

We have to say Hollywood used to have an "S Tier" of Mega Movie stars up to the 1990s. People like Prime Arnold Swartzenagger, Stallone, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Leonardo Dicaprio, etc. Their movies were usually guaranteed hits. Then the S-Tier was deleted/blocked off in the 2000s. And A tier is the highest tier that "modern actors" can achieve.

You can blame a lot of things for the lack of "A List" talent from social media brainrot to people only wanting short form/"bingeable media" etc but I honestly think it's because Hollywood just isn't creating the types of movies that lead an up and coming actor/actress into the A List Category. Stuff like Rom Coms and movies that the entire family can enjoy really boosted the careers of the now current last of the bunch A List celebrities and studios aren't making stuff like that anymore with a prominent character taking the spotlight. It leads to these young actors focusing more on television series and trying to make their way into a marvel film from that and honestly its kind of sad. People used to talk about how tv was the new film in the "golden age" of television and now because of that you have a huge void in actual celebrities with "star power". I can think of a lot of actresses who SHOULD have been A List but they never will be with the current landscape of tv/film. I honestly think the age of A list celebs will die off with the last of the boomers and nobody will ever reach that kind of star power again in a sense that they're "movie stars" and not just "influencers".
