What happened here? The first 2-3 episodes of this show were fun as fuck, focusing on space, the scientific process, the bureaucracy, administration and politics around racing against a clear rival in the space race.
Then somewhere around mid episode 3 the entire show just goes INSANE, remembers it's being made in Current Year and that it hasn't done any real affirmative virtue signaling in a while and now we've spent another 3 episodes watching male astronauts break down and cry, fail to raise their children and do housewife shit while women and minorities have been showing everyone who's boss, getting through training faster than men, being better than men and outclassing them in every field. The dialogue has devolved from administrative, political and scientific intrigue to "muh feelings" in every scene.

Is it all downhill from here or should I keep watching?

Alright, if you're sure I'll try a few more episodes, but it's losing cabin pressure fast.

it actually does calm down a little on the hyper touchy-feely shit after a while, but I agree it feels like there's some mid-season meltdown from the writers

its pure kino from start to finish. some slight dips (season 3 is a bit of a low but 4 recovers it). if you think what youve seen so far is "INSANE" i wont bother pointing out that the shows implementation of social issue stuff is fairly well founded within irl history along the equivalent timeframe because im sure you dont care

if you like the space side of things regardless though, stick with it. season 2 in particular is extremely kino

sure, theyre watching to see how history plays out in that timeline, and whether you like it or not, social issues were a big part of the time periods in question (ie for many of the presidents in the time period in question). youre watching a show that follows a version of american politics in the late 60s/early 70s and crying about civil rights being a central topic.

Season 4 isn't. Season 3 with the openly lesbian president kind of pushed the gay stuff as far as it could possibly go, so the show didn't feel compelled to do any more after that

Yes, women might be over-represented in the show, but it's done in a way that makes sense for the setting.
In real life the Soviets made a huge deal out of putting the first woman in space, and in the show since the Americans are losing the race they feel the need to respond in kind in a big way.
Also fun fact, the real first American woman in space was a lesbian

The Mars space race feels more real than it has any right to be, its really entertaining and doesn't shy away from the dark side. I will spoil it because this might make you hate the show or might make you love it.

That's not what happens. The NASA ship ends up rescuing the Soviet crew, the Helios crew wanted to do it but their mission control on Earth decided against it and took control of the ship away from them.

I know in one season there was an unplanned kid born on Mars, that might have been cool to have a character who's never been to Earth

Season 4 was in 2003 and the final scene jumped to 2012.
So season 6 would be in the 2020s and the 7th and possibly final season would pass ahead of us.

The unplanned kid wasn't technically born on Mars, they had to send the mom up to a ship in Mars orbit to give birth safely as they didn't have the right medical equipment on the surface, and then he went to Earth to have a normal childhood. Though future seasons will likely have other space-born characters who have spent their entire lives out there

It's written by retards that have little interest in actual space history and only wants to pander to themselves and their liberal viewer base. It's a fucking shame, the space race has some incredibly interesting people and dynamics between them. They should have done a 50-50 split between the US and Soviet Union. Korolev and Ghlusko and their relationship alone would give you writing material for several seasons. We don't need to follow garbage drama written for women.

Right now they are making a spinoff focusing on the Soviet side of the race in the '60s.
Also, though the show hasn't explored this yet, according to the writers the singular event that caused the timeline to diverge was Korolev surviving his hemorrhoids surgery in 1966, instead of dying there like irl.
