Mazin is going to have to add a shitload of material to make Abby's sections work. one of the problems with Part 2 is the way they use flashbacks to establish character relationships, while Joel/Ellie was done chronologically for an entire game.

The motivation is that Lev and Yara saved her, when she was about to get the scars' ritual hanging/disembowling treatment.
So she feels obligated to help return the favor.

I do hope they change a lot of this in the show though, spending so much time trying to find medical supplies ends up feeling like a waste when Yara just dies immediately anyway

plus they had escaped, and only become part of the story again because Abby doubles back to find them after talking to Owen for no obvious reason.

the usual way to have a character change loyalties is to challenge the values that made them loyal, not force them to change sides by a series of contrivances. but Abby is fully on board with torturing people and was allowed to go after Joel by Isaac which in the games happened really recently.

like I said, this is stuff Mazin can solve by making major changes. but he's again going to have to do Neil's homework for him and people are again going to whine the that shitty game was changed because different = bad.

The real reason of why she was helping them was to make herself feel better by doing a good deed to "compensate" what she did in Jackson and make the nightmares stop
