A lot of this seems to be overstated. Waris Hussein who played a part in Hartnell's casting and who directed An Unearthly Child got along with him - his main view on Hartenll was that he was homophobic than racist. Verity Lambert was Jewish and Hartnell had no issues with her. Do not get me wrong, he probably was openly racist as we would take it to be, but that is more casual racism of the time. As for his behaviour, a lot of the seems down to his ill health considering he increasingly got more difficult to work with. Tovey is gay. During his adolescent years, his family had difficulty accepting his sexual orientation. Although he says he came out to himself when he was 15 or 16, he came out to his parents when he was 18. In his interview with Tom Lamont of The Observer the actor stated that his schooling made him feel as though he "had to toughen up", going on to say "If I'd have been able to relax, prance around and sing in the street, I might be a different person now." Much of the criticism centred on what was perceived to be a passive criticism of effeminate gay men, with Tovey saying that "I thank my dad for that, for not allowing me to go down the path." Tovey later apologised for the remarks and suggested they did not reflect his views.

Legitimate question, is there a free place to watch all of doctor who online? I can't find it on my usual pirate shit sites, and the best I've found was tubi or whatever. But I don't think it's the full collection, and I know the BBC did some retarded thing about only airing something once then destroying the source film or whatever, but some things were restored via stills or audio or something. I'm new to this shit.

As you have the link already, my advice is go to something like IMDB to see what has the best ratings and what sounds interesting. Some of those ratings may not translate in to your own level or appreciation one way or the other, but it will be a guide. With Classic you can dart around given so much of it is standalone serials, so try different Doctors and eras to see what works for you - one of the better things may be to see who was producer and script editor (there is not showrunnner) once you a familiarity with things. As for starting with with the beginning, basically the first three serials (The Unearthly Child - The Dead Planet - The Edge of Destruction) are there own mini arc for the characters. Though even then you can easily just jump in something like the Third or Fourth Doctor era and probably be fine. The Third Doctor era itself may be a good starting point just on its own. The only other thing I will say is keep in mind these were written as serials as opposed to just all being watched in one go. Eventually they pretty much just become 4-parters (so about 90 minutes), but early-on you have got 4+ ones (in some cases padding) that you may find tiresome if you try to just watch all at once. Really though it is also going to vary per you and the serial in question. Ultimately, you will get a feeling before long of how to find your way around the show and how you will approach it.
