Mizoguchi and Ozu were insanely influential for one. These are all subversions that exist in western media and a lot of these do not exist in anime at least in the same quantity and intensity. They of course still exist sometimes, but I understand the sentiment that it's not really a "trend".
Anime isn't woke in a sense that western media is woke, yet there's a reason most normalfags, especially conservative normalfags are not becoming weebs. Weeb culture did not start as a resort from terrible western media in the 80s / 90s, it started in fact as a subversive exotic alternative to western media. It had designs that were more stylized and "idealized" catering to people who had essentially a fetish for these designs, often preferring those drawings over real people. It was also often edgier than western media and in fact less reliant on generic tropes, you can't imagine something like Lain popping up in western animation at the same time.
Basically, while anime now is often more "traditional" than western media in reality it's just another type of subversive media compared to what actually was at a point considered normal and what was and is still something that people of conservative values consider to be normal.
