i will say this again-leone did two things better than any other director-he knew how to use sound and he knew how to make memorable characters. his shots aren't great, his stories aren't great and his action isn't good. he's overall a middling and inferior director of westerns unless you're a hack like tarantino
Watched Jia's Caught by the Tides yesterday. I forgot how good Jia is at capturing all of the tacky shit I remember seeing in Hu Jintao era tier 2-3 cities. I was somewhat disappointed that it was a retread of his older stuff, but honestly I would have been pretty satisfied if it really was just 2 hours of middle aged Chinese people dancing to eurodance in dingy discos and singing ktv without any plot.
I wonder how much scrutiny he got from state censors in regards to the covid segment, considering how touchy the current Xi cultural regime is these days.
that piece of shit film is so overrated. There are like 4-5 good scenes sandwiched in between a hackneyed plot about gangsters and then a third act that has no formal or social significance. The first act is solid though. And the music was quite good.

I saw in the credits that they started filming new footage in 2023, so I wonder how much time they actually had to cobble something together besides the chopped up b-roll. I fear that Jia is probably not as interested in talking about the future, as you can only really show Zhao Tao getting a smartphone so many times. Mountains May Depart's last act also kind of shows how sloppy Jia can get once we leave his comfort zone of that post Deng reform era.
