By the mid 2000s there were too many films getting put out by specialty divisions having to live and die by the weekend (as per John Schamus' words) and this is bad news for investors shelling out 10s of millions of P & A money for little profit. The move to scale back on film varieties, consolidating towards capeshit blockbusters predates obama and the financial crash of 2008 spooking out the investors was the final nail in this coffin.

nostalgia largely depends on the current state of your own personal life.
if things are shit right now, you will yearn for the seemingly simpler times, there are already 25yo zoomers who lament how things were better in 2015, because they got lost along the way.
But if you keep yourself busy, experience new things and met new people, find new interests and hobbies, you are unlikely to become nostalgic easily.

The lifeblood of rock music are the crackden concerts, the cheap beer, the sweaty basement shows, the bands performing on top of milk crates, the microphones that electrocute you when your lips get too close - The informal DIY Space. Only because it's better than what we have now. I find it so unusual that so many people are now nostalgic for this time era when a lot of our current problems stem from this time period. Pop music was becoming more vain, the political divide was just starting, google and apple were changing the internet for the worst, youtube became a hotbed for people with no creativity. Disney started opening the doors to legacy sequels and capeshit. Even as a teenager, I found this time period to be incredibly lame. Then again, I was a jovial optimistic highschooler that would take this era over one where I'm a struggling jaded adult trying to jump from job to job all while paying my college loans and rent in a postslop world.
The internet was always cynical. People were just less agitated about it because culture war shit didn't happen until later on.
Blame the writers strike. Since the 40s owning a television was the primary entertainment hub for the vast majority of households. Ripping that luxury away nearly a century later even for a period of a few months spun most people into total disarray looking for an entertainment source. It catapulted other mediums, formats and genres into the limelight - for the worse. The Kardashians also need to share their brunt of the blame because they murdered the television format before it could recover from said strike and return. They birthed the perpetual black hole of reality content that quickly infected and paralysed anything it touched, having a stumbling knock on effect to how the world engages with (and even craves) social media. We became voyeuristic to a sickening degree.
