My whole life I was convinced by boomers that this was one of the funniest movies ever made. It seemed to be a common pop-culture reference and some of the scenes even make rounds here.
I decided to watch it last night and oh my goodness it’s the unfunniest, most awkward comedy I’ve ever watched.
Sure, it may have been a thing when it came out with all the 4th wall meta jokes, but the humor in general was so dry and cliche, and had it not been for the profanity and sexual innuendos, it would have the exact same energy as a mediocre show for toddlers.
When its first act was very underwhelming, I was expecting it to start off like the first season of Jojo, thinking “it’s probably gonna get better and funnier!” but not really.
This is the first movie my wife fell asleep to btw.

Your wife always falls asleep after filming movies with me

who made this man a poster?

this and Blazing Saddles, i don't know what causes people to laugh at them.

i like it when they say nigger

mel brooks

if you don't know why his schlock is labeled as the funniest things in universe, you're too green

Fuck you

I'd like to say it was a different era of comedy, but there's movies from that time (even parodies specifically) that I still find laugh-out-loud funny throughout when I rewatch them now.

Spaceballs gets a couple chuckles here and there but that's it. It's pretty boring.

"I like rape"

Most of Mel Brook's movies aren't actually that good, he gets by on the reputation of his decent ones, ZAZ had a much consistently funnier output during that era

Top Secret! is legit non-stop hilarious even today. What a wonderful movie.

wtf does top secret has to do with fucking mel brooks?

So name them, what are the parodies you find laugh out loud funny?

Spaceballs is decent but grossly overrated. Blazing Saddles is Mel's best film

If you rented this movie with your family in the 90s, was your family aware that it's considered "Jewish comedy"? My family didn't know what that even meant, Space Ballls was no different than Uncle Buck and shit like Police Academy 4.

i don't know what causes people to laugh at them

useless idiots, or congratulatory insiders winking in acknowlegdgement that the great master plan is working so well that zio satires of american touchstones and americans' ignorance of intent can still be accepted as classics. space balls is like a postmodern marker that america peaked and will soon be destroyed "for it is amalek" as the idf and netanyahu and rabbi schneersson so like to chant and cheer

I don't understand the appeal of 50 yo humour about parodies of 50 yo media

I don't think there is anything wrong with the movie, anon...

the goy giggles as he is killed

it and blazing saddles are funny because i can quote it with people at work non stop even all these years later

Surely you arent going to tell me you prefer Airplane?

Same, I straight up didn't get half the movie, because they would just make pop-culture references about people I've never heard of in my life and jokes about scandels I also never heard of

.

Galaxy Quest is KHNO
Space Balls is slop
Just like the material source.

It's the same kind of movie but actually good

he’s my sempai, sir

Funny jokes overall, but lethargic editing brings down the pace. Tries to make you feel like you should be still laughing at the joke from 5 seconds ago. What should be throwaway gags become centerpieces. In short, it insists upon itself.

whats a matter with that thing? whats all that churning and bubbling? you call that a radar screen?

no sir, we call it mr. coffee. care for some?

My whole life I was convinced by boomers that this was one of the funniest movies ever made.

It is. I laughed harder in my life than I have in over a decade when I showed this film to my japanese buddies in our tokyo movie group. They'd never seen it before, and they LOVED it. Great time.

Didn't read the rest of your post, it's probably bad. I bet you live a sad miserable life and can't enjoy anything. Couldn't be me

OP, you're not the only one who doesn't laugh at Mel Brooks parodies. Humour is what it is. Brooks way of delivering it doesn't instantly mesh with me, mostly because I find it too obvious or unsubtle.

same concept in both these scenes, Build up, action, twist, final capturing line. HOLY SHIT! CHECK PLZ! I've seen too much of this sort of comedy, can spot it from miles away, I know it's formulaic to force me to laugh, so I prepare myself to not laugh because I don't want to be ordered to have fun.

I too find his movies overrated since they aren't my taste but with that said I wouldn't call them bad comedies and at least I can acknowledge they do have some funny moments. I laughed out loudly at the hair dryer scene thx to Daphnes harsh delivery

AND I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT IT

You're trying way too hard. I can't imagine how upset and angry you must be all the time, all because "da j0000z" director (who's a lot funnier than you'll ever be).

The first Scary Movie I watched (I think it was 2) I was a kid and didn't get at all that it was a pastiche of parodies of scenes from other movies, I still thought it was funny because they were being silly.

Meds & BBC ASAP.

I have no clue what you're trying to say. In what kind of world must I find Spaceballs funny to not be called an antisemite?

You're trying way too hard.

Boomers pissing their pants over stuff like Spaceballs and the King Tut song can probably be chalked up to leaded gas exposure

Its almost like humor is subjective or something you autistic retard.

I dont agree with you but I appreciate you for being the only one here to articulate instead of just going

I DONT SEE HOW ITS FUNNY

soulless zoomer

"articulating" anything

That's not what he's doing. He's going a common disingenuous tactic of cherrypicking and isolating scenes out of the overall flow of the movie in order to a force a pointless point that he's unable to enjoy anything and that somehow generations of people who came before him were "wrong" on some moral level.

Zoomers live every day in a hell of their own creation.
