The "rewriting history" shit isn't even the focus of the story, it's about two bros going through middle age and struggling with their life and careers. The Manson Family/Sharon Tate shit is symbolic, representing a changing Hollywood and how their lives are changing as well. By changing history, they are rewriting their own lives.
It's just a hangout movie for people stricken with anomie, which seems to be most young people these days.

No matter what you think they are, it has plenty more than two good scenes. The scenes with Rick on set with the girl. Booth fighting Bruce Lee and the hippies at the Ranch. Not to mention every scene that was just mundane but well done.
