Episode seems to be well-received in general. Non-game-players seem to like it, so I'm happy for them.
To be honest though, most of its changes feel like strict downgrades from the game. Especially the changes to overall structure (we know Abby's motives upfront now, dance scene including "I don't need your fucking help" moved to ep1, etc) just seem like mistakes and make me want to replay the game instead.
I'm still gonna watch the rest of the episodes and might change my mind especially if they capture Seattle really well.

I replayed the game during downtime and I unironically liked it more than the first time. Haven't seen the show, but from what little I've noticed, the cinematography is a complete downgrade compared to the game. Both games have very moody lighting and the tv show has a very flat look for whatever reason.

Ellie lets up and ends the cycle of violence because she realizes it won't make it her feel better and make her PTSD go away, but she still wouldn't necessarily have been wrong to go all the way and finish the drowning

One of many things the game did better. We see this scene twice, first with nothing but a closeup of Ellie with a tinnitus sound after the killing blow. We don't really know why they let her live.
Then again, much later, this time with a closeup of Abby while the rest of the team argue about whether to kill Ellie and Tommy. Owen as adamantly against it, a theme that'll come up again later. Abby makes the final call to leave them and, combined with the look on her face, gives the first sign that she might regret it or at least that it might not have given her what she hoped it would.

The TV version presumably has no plans to revisit this scene because they've instead clumsily squeezed that argument (plus Owen and Mel looking uncomfortable upfront) into this scene.

Maybe lev is just a better person than Ellie and Abby and chooses not to get revenge and moves on right off the bat. That would make a poignant ending scene and drive home how lost Ellie and Abby were, how pointless their bloody quests for revenge are and also make lev really likable. Not everyone becomes a sadistic revenge revenant when wronged but Ellie definitely should have been one through to the end to keep her character consistent. And then lev is like the good version of Ellie who chooses to live her life and not throw it away or whatever

I think it's pretty clear that neither the actors or the directors actually saw the scenes from the game and are working blind with just the skeleton of how the scenes are, and that's a decent way to make it so it's not a carbon copy of the game but it also a gamble because you can't help but compare and the game will usually win just from the privilege of being first.

It was honestly an improvement over the game scene because I couldn't get over how Tommy just didn't see Abby point a gun at Joel despite having a clear view of the entire room and only reacted until AFTER Joel was shot.

The only problem I have is with Abby. The show had her act too sadistic, almost like some cartoon villain, and drag things out too long just to taunt Joel. Also, the show added this weird line where Abby called Joel “handsome”. What the fuck?

Anyway, I prefer Abby's game portrayal despite her issues as well. She was more angry and more quick to to inflict pain on Joel because all the hate she had for him was being released in that moment.

I honestly would've preferred they delayed it and built up some back-and-forth between Joel and Abby as they save each other in dangerous situations until it's revealed that this was the target that Abby would have to kill. This would've added some conflict between her idea of Joel as the killer of her father and the person she met before she knew it was Joel. She would still decide to kill him but there would be more weight to the decision. This one lacks the shock factor in the game since they were trying to soften it and fix some things leading up to the scene.
