When will we get a good Conan the Barbarian adaptation?

When will we get a good Conan the Barbarian adaptation?

In 1982

Lovecraft deserves an Eggers adaptation. Not sure which director nowadays i'd trust with Conan, it might not work given the political environment of today

They were decent fantasy films but not a good Conan adaptation

A crossover of Lovecraft's work and Howard's work would be kino beyond kinos.
They were friends and H.P had tremendous respect for Robert and IIRC Shuma is inspired by the myths of H.P.

We almost had it in 2021

Milius one a is good movie but I know what you mean by adaptation.
Eh. I don't know. It would probably be boring. Anyway, if you want a decent Lovecraftian™ flick, check out Underwater.
I could see Conan slaughtering dark brood in some sort of fever dream. Pretty sure there were stories like that already, like the abandoned drug town short.

I'll concede that they were not good faithful Conan films but the first was so good that it transcended the source material itself and stands on its own.

Stfu turbonerd

Another alright Lovecraftian™ flick would be Cold Skin. It's not as good as the novel but Xavier Gens did a decent job directing it and it has Ray Stevenson.

An animated film adaptation of one of the original Howard stories with a decent budget would be better than a live action movie. There was almost an animated adaptation of Red Nails, which was a really good choice but it didn't pan out.

True. If streaming services weren't retarded they'd pay Wit Studio for it and call it a day.

1982

just adapt the Frost-Giant's Daughter. that's all

Thoughts on the new Red Sonja?

Arguably, Howard's works and Lovecraft's are arguably shared universes. Lovecraft references Bran Mak Morn and REG references R'lyeh. That said, Lovecraft never took his work that seriously. There was no "Cthulhu Mythos" as far as he was concerned. He called it "Yog-Sothothery" and it basically meant reusing funny sounding words to give a sense of interconnectivity without any actual intentionality behind it.
There's really not all that much in Conan that is politically incorrect except for some racism (which is mostly in how Howard described black people, not actual contents of the stories). You could do a classic story like Tower of the Elephant with no issues at all.
Honestly, though it's not an accurate adaptation, it's a good translation of ideas from Howard's stories into film. You can tell that the writer was familiar with Howard, and not just Howard but the writers that inspired him (there's some Howard Lamb in the movie). You could say it's something more like a "Sword & Sorcery: The Movie" with vignettes from Conan, Kull, and some other stories (there's some of Howard Lamb's Alamut in there, imo)

it might not work given the political environment of today

They've been dialing back the pozz recently for trade war with China reasons. It could easily happen at the moment that a decent enough Conan movie gets made. Worst case scenario, if you want to call it that, would probably be giving the women more character and Conan not bedding all of them. Somewhat similar to the treatment John Carter got in the 2012 movie.

troon director

DOA. Nobody wants to pick it up for distribution because it’s reportedly a pile of shit.
When even Amazon Prime doesn’t want your girlboss power fantasy you know you done fucked up.

Nobody wants to pick it up for distribution because it’s reportedly a pile of shit

I don't know. Pretty sure it got picked up by now and I've seen there's some Strike Back cast members in the movie (Bassett directed Strike Back episodes back in the day).

I never liked this character. She's basically a distillation of all the annoying misconceptions people have about Conan and the rest of the Howard universe being an IP that's good for nothing but puerile titillation and shitty barely-better-than-porn tier writing.

It's Marvel capeshit with swords and chain mail bikinis. REH's Red Sonja was a Swedish chick on horseback that gave the Turks merry hell at the siege of Vienna.

That might be to its advantage, unironically. If you don't just want to watch a soft porn flick, a troon is probably going to do a better job on depicting gender dynamics than a sleazy coomer.
Sure. Not disagreeing but it's perfectly possible to still do something worthwhile with that. Think earlier capeshit like Blade.

a troon is probably going to do a better job on depicting gender dynamics than a sleazy coomer

implying troons aren't the sleaziest of coomers

Fair. But troons are coomers in a way more autistic way.

Hopping into a Conan thread to ask what the hell was up with the remake having people carry boats around?

Wish I had better pics, but I dont care that much.

a troon is probably going to do a better job on depicting gender dynamics

they are the ones with the most warped views on gender

With AI, a good Conan the Barbarian adaptation is now pretty much guaranteed.
It just depends on whether people will accept AI movies.
I think there will be a long period before people accept a purely AI movie as worth their while, no matter how good it is.

You are not redpilled yet.
Not really. They grasp the concept somewhat and obviously take wrong turns but the ones with the most warped views on gender are likely boomers.

warped views on gender are likely boomers

the boomers made the gender dynamics the films are supposed to be depicting lol. a troon is just going to insert their personal and subversive modern views

AI needs to better understand angles and shot composure, instead of always giving the same flat look and center focus.
Not saying it wont get there, but right now it isnt there.

Boomers celebrate roidhead cheaters and are divorced at such a high rate it's not even comical anymore. They have no fucking clue about gender or anything other than some craftsmanship here and there.

irrelevant to my post. and nothing that isn't true of every subsequent generation

Could work, but would depend on which story he'd adapt, I think.

we will most likely never see a King Conan movie

Life is suffering
Her armor could be skimpier, but that's not as bad as I thought it could be.

King Conan 1.jpg - 740x960, 110.5K

no King Conan

no King Lear

Come on Schwarzenegger, give us one last kino. Prove that living in California hasn't rotted your mind and warped your soul.

Lovecraft is unadaptable. Nearly every story, (and all that are called Lovecraftian) hinges on the existence of something so antithetical to the human mind that to look upon it is to endanger your sanity and even drive you suicide. How does that translate to screen? 2 options:

we show it

Protag is driven out of his mind and even unto suicide by....A fish-man? A tentacley mass? A giant tentacley mass? Weak.

we don't show it

Protag is ACTING, bugging his eyes and saying "Oh God!" "Oh Man!" at something off screen? Weak.

Need me a Michael morecock film adaptation

They should do a show that dedicates 1-2 episodes to each story.

is line work good for you?

TimmVampi.jpg - 910x1208, 351.48K

Fucking coomer that guy

Conan is supposed to be charismatic and intelligent. Movie Conan is a fucking retard because they cast someone for sucking dicks instead of being able to even speak.

vampirella

ooo baby

for trade war with China reasons
