It was made to be marketed to network TV before they got a contract with HBO. The show wouldn't even really hit its stride until the last few episodes of S1. It doesn't glorify crime at all. Spielberg, FFC, Scorsese those guys all glorify mafia and mob life. Most of the characters are varying levels of neurotic, tempermental, lazy, fat, ugly, sociopathic and constantly living with the threat of glowniggers catching up to them or being capped by a rival gang.
This show has its funny moments here and there, but it's nearly unwatchable. Tony's kids are annoying as all hell and the way people leave fingerprints at every crime scene with the FBI right on their trails(!) yet somehow never going to jail for it pissed me off to no end. It's so unrealistic that if you took out the swearing, sex, and violence you could air this crap on Nickelodeon.

Sopranos gives one of the bleakest images of a criminal life. The feds are the least of their problems, most characters just get killed by their closest friends.
The greatest heights your crime empire gets you is a lifestyle around upper middle class, but if you die your family goes into destitute poverty like Big Pussy's family. This is why they always assure each other that "they'll take care of x, if anything were to ever happen to you", they fuck each other over any chance they get so it's always a constant fear they gotta persuade each other is not happening.
Everyone in the mob is near-retarded, if they weren't they would have just gone to school and got a normal well paying job since that's where they end up financially anyway. The organizational structure is supposed to make it safer and better than normal crime, but surrounding yourself with unreliable retards who constantly betray you ends up being way more of a headache.
None of the sacrifices are worth it, the biggest reward anyone gets (other than maybe gigachad Little Carmine Jr.) is sex with a prostitute, which is available to anyone who wants that anyway. Even if you got all the money in the world you couldn't use most of it since you aren't supposed to have it.
The only real gain, I guess, is the status and confidence that comes from being a tough guy, but even that is undermined by constant stress and having to be the total bitch of the person above you and bring them money like they own you. The system of "families" is just a pyramid scheme meant to rope in young idiots from their blood relatives to make the biggest sacrifices and take the biggest hits while the seniors get to sit around eating pussy and plapping ass with 40 pound moles on it. On top of that, almost everyone is a fed informant. There's just no upside to being in the mob.
