what the hell was Peter Hackson thinking?
What the hell was Peter Hackson thinking?
You don’t know about the studio pressure and tampering that he had to put up with? Read up on it
MONEY
I understand that a lot of the creative decisions were out of Jackson's control, but shit like this is all on him
Just say no?
Then they fire you and replace you with someone more compliant.
Despite the list of retarded things in these movies I still enjoyed them. Definitely a different feeling to them than the LotR movies. Too much wacky shit and the cringe romance. They could and should have been better.
It’s not really all on him, sure it’s his work but he was under immense time pressure. He wasn’t given nearly enough time.
So?
I liked the one with the dragon. The last one of the trilogy was boring as shit though. Really should have stuck with the original 1 movie idea instead of splitting it into 3
hadn't touched Tolkien material in 10 years at that point
was handed a project in which basically all the preproduction work was done and told to start shooting right away and get it wrapper up in like a month or two
big pressure from the studio to stretch it over a trilogy and so had to fill it with pointless fluff just to pad the runtime
also had plenty of retarded ideas of his own (which was already the case when making LotR, but back then he actually had capable people around him who knew when to tell him no)
had become even more obsessed with putting fucking CGI everywhere due to the evolution of his Weta company since the LotR days
Basically it was a conjunction of perfect conditions to guarantee those movies would be fucking garbage.
If you watch the LotR BTS documentary, it becomes clear that Jackson can't take all the credit for how goos they turned out. EVERY part of this production (sets, costumes, actors, music and so on) was headed by people who came across as super involved and committed to putting out the best work they possibly could.
The seeds for that were already in RotK to be honest, we were just too in love to notice
Then you're out of a job and don't get paid.
3 books, 3 movies
1 book, 3 movies
Thinking of making KINO, that's what
this looked so fucking bad on screen
what the FUCK was he THINKING!?!
that low red gopro footage out of nowhere
kek
Denethor in the third film is a fucking abomination and an anticipation of how Hackson would mangle some of the characters in The Hobbit.
Idk, the terrible CGI, that took me out of the movie constantly was enough for me to hate it.

I actually liked the first movie, despite some of the flaws (which are also very present in the LOTR movies as everyone is aware). It really went to utter garbage with the second movie
On the other hand, the second movie has Smaug, which is probably the single best thing in all three films. Cumberbatch really did go all-out with him, I like his performance a lot and his interactions with Bilbo are the high point of the trilogy. Most of the dialogue in those scenes is taken straight from the book, and the original lines they do add actually work really well, unlike some other parts of the trilogy where the original dialogue is awful.
Yep this is actually the thing that makes me think Jackson was grossly overrated in terms of his role in the LotR movie. The first Hobbit movie was basically ready to start shooting (with all the preproduction work done under Guillermo del Toro). Jackson was just told to pick up a camera and start shooting asap, and it's the film that turned out the best by far. The sequels had him in control from the start and were complete trainwrecks.
Studio interference was a big part too. They said in the LotR BTS docs that they had to push back a LOT against New Line to the point that they mostly just entirely disregarded the studio's rep on set. In the Hobbit movies, I think Jackson may not have had some of the people he would have needed around him to have the guts to show the same independence.
Also jerk Faramir in TTT
Making the Hobbit into 3 movies (which most people regard as the biggest mistake) was Jackson's idea. He even says its his idea in this interview:
youtube.com
Jackson: "By the time we were well into shooting we just suddenly thought, you know this doesn't feel quite right as two movies..."
"So we started to - this is Fran and Phillipa and myself - just the three of us, just privately to knock the idea around (this is while we were filming the film) that maybe we're dealing with three movies here, not two."
Also, the love triangle where Legolas gets cucked is Philipa Boyens' idea. She says so in another interview (I can link if you want.)
Also, the love triangle where Legolas gets cucked is Philipa Boyens' idea.
You know what, I'm gonna add the quote because the reasoning for adding a love teasingly is the most stupidest reason.
Boyens: "Well, it was a "whoops" moment. That was genuine, there really wasn't a triangle, there wasn't. But what happened was when we saw it playing and just that first look between Kili and Legolas, that kind of exchange of looks, was so perfect that we were like .. And also interesting with Legolas, because one of the things we were trying to do was he hates Dwarves in The Fellowship of the Ring . There's this animosity, this whole kind of ... that had to have come from somewhere. What was it about? And we wanted to make it a little bit more emotional than just, "I don't like them"

Like, seriously she's asking "WHAT WAS IT ABOUT?" Bitch, read a book.
Well yeah then there you go. Seems like some of the people at the helm straight up just lost their touch and/or didn't manage to surround themselves with the people who would have reigned in their most retarded impulses.
that had to have come from somewhere
Lol, yeah maybe the millenia-old feud between elves and dwarves due to each fucking over the other repeatedly throughout their shared history?
3 books
LOTR is 6 books thoughbeit.
here we go again
no... no, it's just cuckoldry
Say what you want about the Hobbit, but at least they had soul unlike Rings of Power
OY VEY MR JACKSON A SHOAH RIGHT HERE IN MY OFFICE
lolno
actually it's just one
at least human shit smells better than cat shit
What a cope
could have worked as 2 movies imo tbqh
probably still would be ass as it was rushed to fuck but it at least it wouldn't be like 50% filler (except for the last movie which is 90% filler)
He was thinking "Well, I don't really want to do this, but I'm a loyal son of New Zealand and my country has been loving the tourist money, so I guess I'll crap out another trilogy of movies."
I prefer the hobbit trilogy to LOTR. The hobbit is a lot more bright and fun. And it has martin freeman/cumberbatch interactions which are just joys to watch. The hobbit is a cozy good time with friends while lotr is a bleak slog imo
but kino like this is all on him
Fuck you I liked the barrel scene. It was nice harmless fun
Then see
And you have your answer
Headline:
Peter Jackson walks alway from The Hobbit set. “I refuse to work with these soulless executives”
You think any movie could have recovered from that? Even if they had tried to blackmail him, that would only make things worse
The whole production was production hell
Comfy soundtrack
I seriously believe that LOTR 1-3, in particular Fellowship were just accidentally well made. Every other film he has ever made is mediocre or trash
So basically you can't handle anything darker and grimmer? (Even if it had better story-telling, visuals, acting). Way to limit yourself.
If today's A.I tech existed back then, I would have guessed this scene was A.I generated (that's how bad it looks).
I find it weird how Jackson has garnered a cult-like following even though factual evidence like this shows how much of the mistakes in Hobbit were his fault. There are even faults in LOTR just fewer of them.
Try the M4 edit, it gets rough around the edges in the final chapter but thats due to the shitty source material they had to work with. Its not perfect because they cut a bit too much but at least it is enjoyable to watch without all the CGI garbage.
