I mean only penguins are consistently funny. There are some funny moments otherwise but most of the film is boring and the African setting is blandly portrayed. And some of the plot elements are really fucking similar to Lion King which is in itself not a problem but I am just reminded how well African nature was portrayed there and the drabness of Madagascar 2 only intensifies.
And it's not 3D animation that is the problem, the first film and the third film don't feel nearly as bland. It's just felt like the second film was lazily put together overall.

have not seen 3, but again I have seen 1 and 2 upwards of 50 times so arguably I've studied them at this point. 1 is carried by the jokes which have peaks and valleys imo, the actual conflicts are spaced out and episodic, meanwhile 2 is more funny I find and the conflicts better gel with one another rather than resolving and moving immediately to "the next episode" like the first movie did.
